The' barque Nouveau St. Michel, with a cargo of jarrah timber from Western Australia for the-new railwayi wharf. arrived in port on Thursday morning in charge of Filet Holmes, who with his own crew worked the vessel into port, anchoring at 5 a.m., as none of the barque's crew, -including the captain, were acquainted with the English language, and consequently would be unable to obey the orders of the pilot. From what we could ascertain the vessel left Geographe Bay,' Western Australia, on the. 22nd Feb-, ruary, and has consequently made a very long pas-sage,.-extending over 34-days.-Light winds,-with-scaroely any westing-in them, and. protracted calms seem to have been most prevalent oh the voyage, but nothing of any interest occurred.' The vessel belongs to France,'hailing from Bordeaux, and’the captain and are; of the same , nation. Messrs. The steamship Easbyjcgpie into port on Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock from the South on her voyage to Newcastle., Captain. Anderson . reports leaving, fort Chalmers wharf at 6.30 r.m. on the 27th, cleared 1 the Heads at 7.15 p.m,, had strong northerly wind* : up the coast, arriving at 3 p.m. on the 28th : landed put or. Original cargo, and sailed at 0.30 p.m.; cleared the Heads at 7.35 p.m. ; had strong N.N.E. winds and heavy aea, passing. Cape Campbell at II ».m. on Thursday, and arriving here at 3 p.m. The Easby sailed for Newcastle after discharging 150 tons coal ahortly after 10 o’clock yesterday forenoon. The topsail schooner which arrived in harbor ahortlyafter 11- o’clock on Wednesday night proved, as we stated, to be the Sprav, from Napier. She left there on the 21st Inst., and bad fine weather with very variable winds throughout. Her cargo consists of oil and tallow. Two timber traders, the schooner Cynthia and the cutter Hero, arrived in harbor on Thursday morning from Pelorua Sound, They had fine weather throughout. The s.s. Kangatira, Captain Evans, left Napier at 5.4 A on Wednesday evening, and arrived alongside the wharf at 7.30 on Thursday evening. Experienced light variable' winds and fine weather as far as Cape fawner; thence till arrival a fresh N.W. breeze. The Kangatira will sail lor Napier and Poverty Bay at midnight to-night. |
The ketch Elizabeth has been engaged to supply, gravel to the Corporation. . . .. The steamer Manawatu sailed for Wanganui shortly after 6 o’clock yesterday afternoon. ’ _ The schooner Elizabeth Conway, with produce, from Lyttelton, arrived in port at 2 a.m. yesterday. She left there on the 23rd, and had'ft dead beat up all the way. . „ . , The Napier sailed for Foxton at 5 p.m, yesterday. The Pleione bad not shown up at the Heads at dusk yesterday. With the present wind, if she is coming through the Strait, she should put in an appearance at any moment. ___________________
