THE CITY ELECTION.

official declaration of the poll.

At 12 o’clock on Thursday the official declaration of the poll took place. There were not a great many present, the result being pretty well known, and the interest having in a great measure subsided: Mr. Crawford, the returning officer, said : Electors, -I have’now to declare the state of the poll for the election of a member to represent the-city -of " Wellington" in ' Parliament. The numbers are as follows:—For Mr. Travers, 572 ; for Mr. Hutchison. 557—thus giving a mnjority for Mr. Travers of 15 votes. (Cheers.)

Mr. Travers then came forward and said : Gentlemen, —At the close of the election on Tuesday last, I had occasion to address a few words to the electors, thanking them for the honor conferred upon me in returning me as a member of the House of Representatives. I am quite sure that you all are as tired as I am of speeches on a variety of subjects; and I can only repeat the assurance I gave on Tuesday last that I sh .11 endeavor to do my duty as your representative, and shall lose no opportutuhity of making myself acquainted with the special wants of this city, with a view of endeavoring to meet their requirements by legislative action in the Assembly. You may rely upon it that there shall be nothing wanting on. my part in the shape of effort to justify the confidence that the electors have reposed in me. (Cheers.) This concluded the proceedings.
