As customary the New Zealand Times came in for a fair share of Mr. Travers’ atttention last night. • In’ justice we publish ' what he said. It demands little remark from us. Mr. Travers and his candidature have been commented on in these columns in a manner which his prejudices may have thought improper, since he seems most impatient of comment, but which we are certain has not in one instance exceeded the fair bounds laid down by honest opposition. If he chooses to be annoyed because he has not our support, and to feel piqued because he has not the support of a majority of the electors, he may be as abusive as he pleases, and may, as he desires, make the contest with the Mayor more personal. That shall not swerve us from our course, - which is steadily and consistently to oppose him, without using the low language that he has more than once applied to us. Mr. Travers, we are glad to notice, admits the correctness of our reports of his remarks regarding the Town Clerk, but says that they bear a different meaning to that ascribed to them. It'is Mr. Travers’unpleasant position if not misrepresented to be misunderstood. This arises from those who listen to him attaching one meaning l to his words, whilst he intended to convey another, but somehow failed in carrying out his intentions. In conolusibh,’’bec*ause Mr. Travers descends into vulgar abuse and low personalaties, there is no reason that we should follow him.
