"AS YOU LIKE IT."

TO THE EDITOR OY THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES. Sir, —In justice to some of my fellowworkers allow me to make a few remarks which wilL I feel sure, soften your resentment at their performance last night. The delay in commencing, trying to the audience, and agonizing to theme behind the curtain, was caused by the non-appearance of two important members of the dramatis persona:, one of whom arrived at 8.30 p.m., the other not at all. The play could not have proceeded but for the kind and courageous assistance of ),one of the company, who volunteered to read the missing actor's part, in addition to playing the two for which he was cast. "Every one can master a grief but he that has it." I, sir, who have played Rosalind some hundreds of timeß, felt, under this sudden contretemps, my mind become " a blank," and " the receipt of reason a limbeck only." No wonder then that " chaos " reigned in theirs, many of whom were playing their parts for the first time. But herein, sir, I must (with all due defence) differ from you. So grateful am I for the support which, under such great difficulties, enabled me so quickly to regain my self possession, and give to that fine audience an impersonation which you are pleased to Bay was "perfect;"' that I would gladly here, with your' permission, publicly testify to my sense of obligation ; and moreover will under-. take to promise that on Monday night the same play will pass off without a flaw.—l remain, &c, MAKY F. SCOTT-SIDDONS. Empire Hotel, March 17.
