';(raß PRESS AGENCY.) ! Auckland, Friday. A ; charge of breach of the Merchant Ship* ping Act against Captain Carey caused a scene in Court to-day. Carey was not present, ati>l Captain Lodder applied :for an adjournment. The charge was for neglecting to pay George-Frost, lately mate of the Star of the South, £ls 4a, balance of wages due. ■ Bussell, solicitor for the plaintiff,- objected to Lodder appearing for defendant, on the ground that he was not a professional man and had no right to- appear. The Bench considered that the case should be adjourned, Carey being at sea. -Bussell - protested, and a scene ensued. The case was adjourned. Captain Moffat, of the barque Santiago, has Men arrested on a charge of landing a harmonium for which entry had not been passed. .What:Moffat arrived from England he had a harmonium aboard, which he wished to sell Gank bought it as the barque was going into the stream, and .the harmonium was landed and placed in: the bonded store.; It was afterwards taken home. ■; Great preparations are being made for the ■ports to-morrow. Christchurch, Friday. The ewe fair to-day was not very successful, 3477" ewes were entered, but only a small portion were’sold. T. H. .Murray, of the "Wairarapa, bought another lot of Sutton’s rams to-day, which will' leave by the next steamer for Wellington. Oamakd, Friday. ‘A sad event occurred here last night, which Captain Duncan Sain, of the. topsail schooner Maid of Otago, lost his life. The schooner is moored at a berth in shore of and last night Captain . Bain came‘up to town, and on his way back again, at about. midnight, he lost his footing while Walking down the upper or old jetty, and was precipitated to the rocks below, a depth of about , 15Q feet. He was found quite dead, lying on his right side, at 6 o’clock this morn-. Ing ty.the night watchman at the breakwater. The body was conveyed to the Northern Hotel and an inquest held this afternoon. A verdict of accidental death was returned. Deceased leaves a wife and family in Dunedin. •/ Hokitika, Friday.
