-■- Electoral Notices "10 THE ELECTORS OF THE OF WELLINGTON. GENTLEMEN.—In offering myself ascandidate for the vacancy in the representation of the city, I do so in the conviction tfcaS my political opinions are very much in unison with those of a majority of the electoral bosyl lam very strongly in favor of a vigorous prosecution of the Public Works policy, in so far as the completion of unfinished lines o 3 useful railway and other reproductive «ndea> takings- is concerned. I regard it as a public loss that railway lines, such as tbaS from Wellington to Masterton, should soft have been pushed on more expeditiously ki the past. The group of Local Government Acts whicfc became law in 1876 are essentially s>un<l m principle! They preserve the true tradition dr. British liberty ; but having been opposed in their progress, and ultimately passed in haste, the Acts themselves require amendent in detail. Their consideration &jmJ improvement should form an important iteia of parliamentary business next session.
To derive the full benefit which an exteaBion of Public. Works and. the institution ol Local Government is capable of conferring upon the country, our land laws require furfclKas? revision, so that settlement by an industrfcae population may easily be effected withccafc burdensome conditions.
\ ; A general Bystem of free primary educatiaa, whereby the children of the colony can be. taught useful knowledge, without reference to \- religious dogma, ought to be one of the earliest measures brought before Parliament, a measure I should have much satisfaction in supporting. I am an earneßt advocate of economy aaS retrenchment in Government wherever these can be applied without, debtsment to the public service. Knowing that the members of the Governsment are administering the. affairs of tiso country satisfactorily ; believing, that they are fully aware of the requirements of the colony, and will be prepared at tfes proper time, to submit to the Legislature mis&i measures as may be necessary to meet tbsSx requirements,—l have lie hesitation iu stating that the present Government should have tay-.; firm support. ;.■',': It seems almost unnecessary for me to asiS that any proposals likely to militate agsiaaS the permanent establishment of the city of. - Wellington as the seat of Government fori, united colony, would encounter my iaosi ■itrenuous opposition; while everything tending to advance its interests might reckon, witifct equd certainty, on my hearty support. &xs& I can see no reason to anticipate the least likelihood of divided counsels amongst those who are actuated by similar views on these* points. Kespectfully soliciting your suffrages, I have the honor to be, Gentlemen, Your obedient servant, WILLIAM HUTCHISON March 5.
