DEAR VEGETABLES.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES.
Sib, —Touching the few remar s made by his Excellency the Governor at the luncheon of the Putt Agricultural Society, in reference to quality, price, &c., of vegetables in Wellington. It is the opinion of the writer as well as of numbers more, that a marketplace is required, not only where people could purchase, but where market gardeners would be able to obtain a fair market price for their goods At present there is not much encouragement for them, as a few shopkeepers have it all their own way, except they have a hawker’s license. For instance, a farmer comes in with a load of vegetables—what is he to do' with them but let some shopkeeper have them at his own price, or take them home again. Again, a gardener told me the other day that he took rhubarb to town—the price given was 7s. per dozen bundles; and before he left the shop he had the satisfaction of seeing a customer purchase one of the said bundles at fifteen-pence. And I have known many instances where the tiller of the soil has carted his goods about until he got tired, and then let some one have the lot for what he would give, so that he and his poor horse might get home. To remedy this is to overthrow monopoly.— I am, &c., Eaglehawk.
