When addressing the electors on Friday evening last Mr. Travers expressed innocent astonishment at anyone being capable of fancying that he (Mr. Travers) was ever opposed to the Public Works and Immigration scheme. He also wanted to bet £5 with anyone who would show him a record of his having spoken in opposition to Public Works and Immigration. W ithout taking up his bet, we may point out that the Wellington Independent reports him as having, in the Odd Fellows’ Hall .on January 17, 1871, spoken on the Public Works and Immigration policy of the Government as follows: —“He could tell them (another thing. He was opposed to the present Government—opposed to every member of it. They had been dragging a golden cloud before the eyes of the people of the colony, but their policy was a delusion, and contrary to all known practicaltheoriesof political economy, arid was likely to heap up burdens under which the colony would not be able to stagger.” In the Wellington Independent of [January, 27, 1871, he is reported as having said to a large meeting of electors : —“ He was only in favor of immigration to the extent ltd which it promoted the colonisation of the country. He believed that there was now in the colony more than enough labor to carry out all the works which could be undertaken with our present means.”
