Auckland, Friday. Mr. Tole addresses his constituents tomorrow. Bishop Cowie distributed prizes to Trinity Church Sunday-school scholars. In consequence of Eden County Councillors refusing to show the minute of agreement with the Bank of Australasia for a loan the councillor in question threatened legal proceedings. Other councillors then, consented to show the minute. Mr. Whitaker, in reply to a deputation, said the Government will shortly open land at the Thames district for settlement. The Railway Commissioners reported in favor of reclaiming a portion of the harbor between Point Britomart and the wharf, so as to extend the railway to the wharf and establish a central station. They also recommend that tickets should be sold in shops, cheap Saturday and Sunday trains, and increased facilities for country settlers. The volunteers received the representatives to-day. McLean, carbine champion, was drawn on a gun carriage. Dr. Pollen goes to Wellington with his family to-morrow, and afterwards proceeds to Napier; thence to Taupo to meet Rewi on the 20th. A deputation waited on Dr. Pollen to-day and presented a resolution of Eden County Council requesting him to push on the railway. New Plymouth, Friday. The Taranaki agricultural statistics for 1877 have been published. They show—Holdings, 745; wheat, 1016Jacres; oats (grain), 711 acres; barley, 48 acres ; grass, 82,340 acres; potatoes, 596 acres; other crops, 268 acres. Total, 85,159 acres. Mr. George Young, the Canadian Commissioner, who'has been deputed to visit the Sydney Exhibition, which takes place in April next, Waited upon the Chamber of Commerce yesterday and explained the exact object of his mission, which is to draw together closer bonds of amity and commerce than are existing between these colonies and Canada, and he explained that Canadian exhibits at Sydney would be principally agricultural machinery, and suggested the advisability of urging the to send some one to the Sydney Exhibition to report on the Canadian exhibits. The Chamber unanimously resolved to ask the Government to do so. A letter from the Minister of Justice has been received here stating that the Government will at once consider the law which prevents absentees being sued in Magistrates' Courts without the consent of their attorney, and will take steps to amend it.
