THORNDON WESLEYAN SABBATH SCHOOL.
In connection with the fourth anniversary of the above school, a service of song, with connective readings illustrative of Bunyan's "Holy War," was held by the scholars and teachers in the Moleaworth-street Wesleyan Church-last evening. There was a crowded attendance, the church being literally crammed. The Rev. Mr. Reid occupied the chair. The connective readings were given by the Rev. S. Morley, and the Rev. Mr. Dewsbury conducted the service. Two solos, one by a lady and Olie by a gentleman, were performed in excellent style, and elicited enthusiastic applause, and the singing in connection with the service of song was.very pleasing. The following annual report (the fourth) was read during theevening,:—' "It is with feelings of gratitude for the mercies of another year that the teachers and committee of theThorndon Wesleyan Sabbathschool present their fourth annual report. Our numbers show a slight increase both in the scholars and teachers on those mentioned in our report of last year ; also, a decrease of six in the -average attendance of scholars. This decrease has been principally among the elder scholars ; while among the infants there has been an increased average attendance, th'eclass sometimes numbering over 40, and seldom under 30. We regret to report the death of Amelia Morris from scarlet fever. Arrangements have been made to receive the British Workman and Band of Hope Review periodicals by the mail, a copy of which is received by each scholar present on the day of distribution. The library has received an addition of 45 volumes during the year. Great care is taken in selecting the books for the library that they may have a good moral tendency and yet be interesting to the schohrs. The library now numbers 292 volumes. The scholars' annual treat was held on Monday, January 22 (Anniversary Day), in the Hon. J. Johnston's paddock in Hobson-street. Abuut 130 scholars were present, and spent a most enjoyable day. An effort has been made to increase the new schoolroom fund by holding a service of sacred song, the results being very encouraging, enabling us to hand to the treasurer a sum of £lO 17s. Bd. The number of scholars on the books are as follows:—Boys, 70 ; girls, 71 ; total, 141 ; average attendance for the year, 88. Number of teachers, 14 ; average attendance, 11. The following are the office-bearers elected for the year :—Mr. Watt, superintendent ; Mr. Kirk, Becretary|; Mr. Isaac, libra-
riau. We close this report praying that the labors of the past year may not be lost, but. that an abundant harvest may be the result." A statement of accounts in connection with the school was read, showing a balance in hand of £5 lis. 3£d. A vote of thanks was accorded to the chairman, and after prayer the meeting dispersed.
