The yme-ball may be used to-day for rating chronometers. A chronometer true on Greenwich time •would show 12b. JOmin. when the ball drops. Any difference is error, plus or minus, of the chronometer. Quite an unexpected stranger appeared in port yesterday morning in the of H.M.S. Sappho. As she showed the quarantine flag the health Officer went on board,'and Drr Keelan, the surgeon, reported a case of fever of a mild type and not infectious, The Sappho.comes here from Sydney, which she left on the 24th ult., and had fine weatiier down. The object of her visit here is to tranship to H.M.S. Sapphire, now in Port Chalmers, a number of supernumeraries. The latter will arrive here shortly. The Sappho will proceed from this port to the South Sea Islands. „ The p.s. Manawatu and the s.s. Stormbird sailed for "Wanganui last evening, the former at 8 o'clock and the latter at 7.30. The Cable steamer Agnes left yesterday afternoon at 4 p.m. for Cook Strait, to finish the laying of the Cook Strait Cable by splicing on the Lyell Bay shore end. She will anchor outside for the night, and commence operations at flood tide this morning. The work which Captain Sims is about to perform is of the most difficult sort in connection with cables.s. Tni, Captain Bonner, left Foxton at noon on Sunday last, and called at Waikanae and Mana for wool, and arrived In port at 9 a.m. yesterday. She sailed for Kaikonra and Lyttelton at midnight. The brig Robin -Hood, from Newcastle, sailed into port yesterday afternoon, and anchored at 5 o’clock. She has made a rattling fine passage down this time, having done the distance from port to port in seven days. She left Newcastle on the 26th ult, and had fresh E.N.E. wind the whole way. Made Cape Farewell on Sunday last, and came through the Strait with a moderate westerly wind. Had fine weather throughout. She brings 500 tons of coal and a quantity of iron. ~ ~ . The ketch Wild Duck arrived from the Manukau yesterday afternoon. The cutter Dido for Blenheim, and the ketch Jane Elkin for Pelorus Sound, left yesterday afternoon. The ship Hurunui, Captain Adams, left yesterday at 3.30 p.m. for Port Chalmers, where she will load for London. She took 52 casks from this port, shipped by Messrs. Krull and Co., for London. The Wanaka, from Dunedin and Lyttelton, will arrive here this forenoon, and sail for Napier, Poverty Bay, Tauranga, and Auckland to-morrow. The Bangatira leaves this afternoon for Napier. The departure of the steamer Kiwi for the East Coast has been postponed till this day. The ship Avalanche has finished loading, and will clear at the Customs this day. The ship Ocean Mail did not leave yesterday for London. She was towed up to windward by the Tul so as to get a slant to cleat Halswell Point. She will It is expected get away to-day. The schooner Nelson left Timaru on the Ist inst., and had northerly winds the whole of the passage, •with the exception-of a few hours S.E. wind. She brings 83 tons produce. The Government s.s. Stella sailed at midnight for Cape Campbell and The Brothers.
