WELLINGTON v. STAR CLUBS. This match was resumed on Saturday, and resulted in a very easy win for the latter club. The not-out men of the Stars in the second innings, Garwood and Mason, again appeared at the wickets, Thompson and Bryce bowling. Both batsmen commenced scoring rapidly. Seven were scored off Bryce's first over, and half a dozen off Thompson's first, and though every over was not punished so.severelj, it soon appeared that it was neither Bryce's nor Thompson's day out. After bowling three overs Bryce gave place to Thompson at the northern crease, Armitage going on to bowl against the wind. Just before this change Mason had been bowled by Thompson, having put together 21 in the style which he used to show a couple of seasons since. For want of practice he was much out of form in the early part of the season, but the clean driving and the safe cutting shown in this innings proved that he is the better for practice. Telegraph : 74—3—21. Blacklook filled the breach, and he and Garwood kept the field merrily at it; but the fielding was anything but good. Catches were missed,-returns were in some instances tardy, in others wide, and those which were direct and sharp were fumbled by the wicket-keeper. Speed's longstopping, on the other hand, was now and all through the innings excellent, but one bye being run, whilst Kennedy and Lynch each did the work of two men. As Thompson was being knocked about unmercifully Fordham was put on in his place, and the change came off well. Off his first over Garwood was taken by Lloyd at cover point. Garwood's innings was one of the most brilliant played by a local player in Wellington for some time past —good free hitting, and plenty of it all through, without a chance excepting a rather difficult one in the slips at the commencement of the play. His score included one 6, one 5, one 4, five 3s, a dozen 2s, and seven singles. Telegraph: 103—4—61. Wickets now began to fall fast ; J. A. Salmon was bowled by Armitage for a single, I. J. Salmon was disposed of for a duck's egg, and Blacklook was immediately afterwards beautifully caught by Lynch at long leg. Haughton and Lambert were now together, but the latter was clean bowled by Arndtage without scoring, and the remainiugmen, Haughton, Bond, and Russell, contributed another dozen to' the score, the innings closing for a total of 129, ■ , ;■
The Wellingtons thus had to make 140 runs to win, but their play was even worse than on the previous day. Kennedy and Lynch were sent to the wickets first, Garwood and I. J. Salmon bowling. Garwood opened with a maiden, and the first ball of his next over clean bowled Lynch, Kennedy having driven Salmon for a brace in the interval. 2—l—o. Speed, the not-out man of the previous innings, joined Kennedy, and both batsmen were playing steadily, when Kennedy was very unfortunately run out, Garwood successfully throwing the ball from the slips. 2 —l0 —4. Thompson filled the vacancy, but one of Garwood's broke in and lowered his wickets after he had scored one. Lloyd, the next man, played well though suffering from a sprained ancle, and put eight together cleverly, a substitute running for him, when he was cleverly caught by Evans. He cut a ball rather low, Evans who was standing at point a good way out, jumped and made a splendid catch, fully meriting the applause with which the feat was greeted. 4—17—8. Speed was theH bowled by Salmon, Edmunds was also bowled by the same man, and Knapp and Horwood were together. Both men played the losing game very carefully and steadily, and a few runs came, but the fates were all againßt the Wellingtons. Knapp was then' run out; Horwood was caught by Garwood ; Armitage's middle wicket was sent flying by Garwood's first ballj and the two last men, Fordham and Bryce, were at the wickets. The former was the only man of the team who got iDto double figures, and when a dozen had been placed to his credit he returned the ball into the bowler's hands, and the innings closed for 59. The fielding of the Star Club was first-rate all through, and the bowling very difficult to play. Messrs. Grimstone and Vincent acted as umpires, and their decisions gave general satisfaction, only one occurring in which any doubt arose, viz., that of Horwood. Some witnesses of the game said the ball which Garwood caught had struck the batsman above the wrist. However, the batsman very properly at once accepted the decision.
