The ketch Forest Queen, Captain Watohlin,'sailed for Foxton yesterday afternoon with e cargo of raii- > way material. The Murray sailed for Nelson and West Coast yesterday afternoon at 5 30 o'clock. The departure of the Easby for Lyttelton has been ■ postponed till 10 o'clock this morning. I The ketch Agnes, with a cargo of wool, hides, and . tallow from Patea, arrived in port yesterday. The Eangatira is expected to leave at 10 o’clock to-day for Napier. A private telegram, received yesterday (says the Otago Times of the 17th inst.), by a Dunedin resident, conveyed the gratifying intelligence of the safe arrival of the ship Lord of the Isles at Melbourne on the 13th inst. This ship met with heavy weather on her passage out. and had to put Into Cape Town with the loss of the captain and ten seamen. Some passengers for Dunedin are on board her. The yacht Secret arrived at Auckland on the 11th inst., after a favorable run from this port of seven days. She experienced unprecedentedly heavy rain on the coast. The Hannah Broomfield on her trip to Kaipara from this port experienced very heavy weather. Some of her sails were blown to ribbons, and her ballast shifted. The ]retch Reliance, which was sailing along the coast in company with her, escaped the bad weather, probably by sailing on the skirts of the gale. The schooner Aspasia, which arrived there on the 10th inst., experienced exceedingly tempestuous The s.s. Tui will sail for Foxton this evening. The s.s. Napier from Foxton arrived in port at an early hour yesterday morning. She returned to tiie same place yesterday evening at 8 o’clock. The s s. Tui, Captain Bonner, left Lyttelton at 7 - p.m. on the 19th Inst.; arrived at Kaikoura at 8 a.m, yesterday ; sailed at 9 a.m., and arrived In port at half-past 11 o’clock last night. Experienced strong N.W\ breeze across the Strait. When the brigantine Enterprise was down the East Coast, landing timber at Blackhead from Kaipara, on ■ the 29th January, lying at anchor, with a portion of her crew ashore and a gale blowing at the time, during a heavy squall the cable parted and the vessel had to put to sea, with only the captain,' one seaman, .and the cook on board; but alter four days’ knocking about in very heavy weather, she was brought to an anchorage again and the crew taken on board. The Union Company’s steam-tug Koputai was spoken by the ship Chaudiere, which arrived at Nelson lately, on December 12, In 27.55 south and 23,8 west. The vessel was under sail at the time, and reported all well on board. The p.s. Manawatu, which sailed for Wanganui at 8 o’clock on Monday evening, had to return to port , yesterday morning, owing to an accident to her ma- . chlnery. It appears that at midnight on Monday,
when the steamer was about Maua Island, one of the r caps of the crank-shaft bearings came off, consequent upon the threads of the bolts which held it down stripping. The pin of one of the cranks was also found to be bent. The accident, although trifling, - was of such a nature that the vessel could no longer use her machinery, and sail had to be set. but ns the wind was against her. Captain Harvey was obliged to make for Wellington. Mr. Carman, the engineer, ■ however, succeeded in fastening the cap on again, after the vessel had been under sail for two hours, and she was then enabled to proceed the remainder of the way rlader steam. The Injury was soon repaired here, and she made another start for Wanganui at 8 o’clock last night The Union Company's steamship Taranaki, Captain Andrew, arrived alongside the wharf at 11 a.m. yesterday, from the South. She sailed from Port Chalmers at 4 p.ra. on Saturdav last; reached Akaroa at 4 o'clock next morning; left at a quarter-past 9, and not into Lyttelton at 1.15 p.m.; sailed at (5 p.m. oh Monday, and arrived here as above. The Taranaki has been in the graving dock last week at Port Chalmers, getting an overhaul. She proceeded North at midnight yesterday* The Union Company's 8.8. Wellington, Captain Lloyd, from Northern ports, arrived here yesterday at 8.30 a.m. She left the Manukau at 11 a.m. on the 17fch *, arrived off New Plymouth at 5 a.m., and sailed at 9.30 a.m. on the 18th ; got into Nelson at 3 a.m. on the 19th, and left at 11 a.m.; reached Plcton atCp.m.; sailed again at 3 a.m., and arrived here as above. Experienced fine weather throughout. The Wellington proceeded South at 3.40 p.m. yesterday.
