Auckland, Saturday. Mr. F. B. Passmore was examined by the Kailway Commission' to-day relative to timetables and fares. At the Theatre last night Miss Kena, entering with friends, was refused admittance, not having obtained an order. She considered herself insulted, and went on the stage and insisted upon her husband, Maeder, ceasing playing. He left Emmett to finish the play. To-night, in consequence of the embroglio, the performance was changed. The Kailway Commission is holding preliminary meetings. The Press are to be admitted only during examination of witnesses. The Canterbury has sailed without Sterndale. Among the passengers is Sherwood, who commanded a Confederate steamer during the American war, and bears scars and several wounds.
Wanganui, Saturday. In the cricket match to-day, Marton v. Wanganui, the former only scored 24 in the first innings, and 38 in the second, owing to the bowling of Cross and Farrington. Wanganui made 91, beating Marton in a single innings, with 29 runs to spare. Cross made 30, and Farrington 23. The match was played on the ground preoared for the All England match, which was in splendid condition. Porangahau, Sunday.
The Kiwi arrived- from Wellington this morning. Mr. McDougall and 17 men landed. The steamer commenced discharging cargo, but Was forced to proceed to sea owing to the wind changing. It is supposed she has gone on to Napier. Nelson, Saturday. The Synod closed last night. The Rev. Mr. Selwyn, the newly-elected Bishop of Melanesia, is to be consecrated here to-morrow morning. The English cricketers leave for the West Coast to-morrow. Ddnedin, Saturday. The annual meeting of the Otago Institute was held last night. Dr., Neville was elected President for the ensuing year. ; Mrs. Soott-Siddons took a farewell benefit last night at the Prinqess Theatre. There was a large and brilliant audience. Her engagement has been quite as successful as any yet known in Dunedin. ■.• , , !
