“ A ‘ find ’ under rather peculiar circumstances,” says the Ballarat Post, “was made on Tuesday by Mr. J. Barberis, landlord of the Bridge Hotel, Bridge-street. Mr. Barberis was cleaning down a shelf in the bar, when he came across what appeared to be, so far as the soiled nature of the article admitted of recognition, a letter addressed to ‘John Smith,’ Jones’s, or Bones’s, or, in fact, anybody else’s hotel. The house having been formerly occupied by a man named Bones, this was the name supposed to have: been originally written on the letter. However, Mr. Barberis thought the best plan would be,, seeing that the postmark was something; like twelve months’ old, to open the envelope, and see the purport of' its contents, which he accordingly did, and, to his surprise, found contained therein a bill of .exchange for the sum of £35, together with a cheque of £9, making in all the insignificant total of £44. Mr. Barberis immediately communicated the affair to the police, with n view to an owner being found for the property. We understand that some time ago an individual made several inquiries at Jonas’s Earl of. Zetland Hotel with reference to a letter expected.by him, but, of course, could gain no tidings of it. ; The mistake occurred probably through the letter being directed, to- ‘ Bones’s ’ Hotel-instead of jTonas’s, or vice verm.. if, John Smith, should be fortunate' enough to turn up and get his money it will probably prove an agreeable surprise to him.” Rowlands Eukonia is a new and fragrant powder for the face and skin, and is especially recommended to ladies as being far superior to all other Violet and Toilet Powders.
