WAIRARAPA RACES.
SECOND DAY. (from odr own correspondent.) (BY TELEGRAPH.) The Club was again favored with flue weather to-day, and the attendance was even larger than that of the previous day. In every • township in the AVairarapa last evening there was an immense business doing. Many had 'to go oh to Carterton and Masterton in order to get beds, not even a rough shake-down 'being obtainable at Eeatherston, Tauherinikau, 'or Greytown. The racing business of the day was commenced with the Hurdle Race, for which three sported silk, Tommy Dodd being scratched, as the course was considered rather hard for his feet, and Blue Jacket was saved Hor the Jockey Club Handicap; but the weight, Bst. 31b., placed on him for that event, dissatisfied Mr. Baird, and he scratched him. The first heat, for the stewards of this meeting have not done .away with that relic of barbarism, resulted in an exciting race between Kangaroo and Steeltrap, the former winning merely by the superior riding of Desmond, jvho piloted him. In the second heat Kangaroo had much the best of it, and had Steeltrap beaten before half the distance was travelled. The. next race, the Hack Hurdles, brought out. a field of eight, and caused the greatest possible .excitement. Two .Worses, ,My . and Straight Tip, hauled themselves out from the field, and for half a &ile ran neck aud neck ; first one and then the other had the advantage by a nose. On running off a similar race ensued, and Ely was eventually cleverly landed winner by a length. The Southern Chief Produce Stakes brought out a field of eight, and resulted in one of the prettiest races of. the meeting, though after the first mile Blanche, who started at even money, did not disappoint the hopes formed of her. Matipo, King of the Ring, Shadow, Baron, and' Alitfe May all ran well, and Southern Chief has nothing to be ashamed of in producing such a field of horses. The Jockey Club Handicap proved to be the “ moral ” it was accounted to old Tambourini. He back for a mile and a quarter, and then went through his field and won by half a dozen lengths. The stewards, Mr. Gilligan, and a few others then met in the stewards’ room, and Mr. Walker was congratulated on his success in bumpers of champagne. On the subject of the Hack Race a question arose which a meeting of the stewards was called upon to decide. Amongst the entries was that ot Mr. Hugh Gillies’ Hurapai, which ran away with the Hack Race on the previous day. It was concluded that according to generalpractice the winner of one Hack Race was not entitled to start for a second race of the same character ; but the stewards decided that the Hack Race of the first day was a catch-weight race, whereas that on the second day had attached to it a condition that all horses should carry over list. A field of ten faced the starter, and Albert won, Hurapai being nowhere. In the District Plate there was a pretty spin, a local horse named Diver winning, Voltarina, who secured second place, running better than she has run before. The stewards one end all, with the secretary (Mr. Wardell) and the starters (Messrs. McMaeters and Drummond), worked hard to bring the meeting to a successful termination, and deserve every credit for the Watrarapians for the manner in which they managed affairs. Me. A bad start was effected, but was of no particular consequence, as all commenced by holding except Princess Mary, who rushed to the front and tried to cut out the running for her stable companion. Stirabout; tho others, however, were not to be caught in this manner, and Princess Mary, twenty or thirty lengths ahead, was allowed to travel solus, the
other four, all in a bunch, hanging behind, The stand was passed the first time in this ordex*, but going up towards the clump of trees Tambourini was let out, and on emerging from the clump was leading. Stirabout kept him company for a time, but stood tailed off, and Mawi was seen in the race no more. Ada, however, left the ruck in a rush, and passed Princess Mary and Stirabout, and challenged Tambourini. For a moment or two she looked dangerous, but one tap and old Tam jumped off with a clean lead, and won by a couple of lengths. Time, Srniu. Isec. HACK RACE OF 10 BOVS.
