Navigation Board a formal complaint against the master. Thomas Meiklejohn, of continued drunkenness during the voyage out. A meeting of the St«m Navigation Board was accordingly called on Friday morning, to make an enquiry into the matter, captain Devlin was in the chair. Prior to the commence- . ment-oi -the proceedings, a m edlcal„certitote wa« handed in, stating that Captain Meiklejohn was suffer 1 - * w from lumbago, and consequently unable to attend, and it was- therefore desired to postpone the enquiry until 10 o’clock on Monday morning. It is jmderstood ~ since the arrival of the ship In port the captain , lias resigned the command, which has been conferred on the chief officer. , . . . , *■ > The sartic paper informs us that some curious reve- > . lations were made in the Sandridge Police Court on the 18th January, as to the fnanner in which seamen are tempted te desert from their ships on arriving in the port of Melbourne. A lodging-housekeeper in Sand- . ridge'named Joseph Bennett was summoned by a sea- . ’ man named Joseph Gibbon for illegally detaining his wearing apparel. There was a cross summons from Bennett, claiming £6.145. 6d. from Gibbon for several weeks’ board and lodging. When in the witness-box .'Gibbon swore that on -the arrival of the St. Osyth Bennett went into the forecastle and asked if any of the seamen wished to leave the ship, as the-wages in the port were £9 per month. Gibbon deserted from the ship, and stated that Bennett brought a boat under the bowa of the ship at night and took away his .clothing. Gibbon stayed at Bennett s boarding-house, and when he left Bennett detained hisclothing. A ' quarter-master, who also deserted from the St. Gsytn, supported Gibbon’s evidence as to the representations made by Bennett to the sailors on the arrival of the .St. Osvth. - The magistrates adjourned their decisions in both cases.
