Excellent iron ore has been discovered at Chilili, not far from the eastern, end of the Great Walk The American barque Milo has been lost on the coast of Foukein. .A trading society has been formed at Japan, to trade with China. The Governments of both countries have granted special privileges. The Japanese silk trade is proving highly remunerative this season. Two silk merchants have left for Italy.- ; The yearly export is equal to 120,000 cards-of worm eggs. The hull and machinery of the gunboat Lapwing have been towed into Shanghai. The machinery and guns are safe.. The French Government has invited the Chinese to participate in the Paris Exhibi. tion.- A large number of exhibits are being collected. The Leonora, steamer, ran into the brig A. F. Levy in the Formosa channel. The latter vinstantly sank, and all lives were lost. One hundred of the ringleaders of the Japanese insurrection have been executed. A large fire has taken place in the suburbs of Foochow. Two thousand houses were burnt down, and a hundred people were killed. The educational movement is rapidly spread* ing over Japan. Chipli advices state that there are prospects of a great famine. The winter has already set in. Parents are selling and giving away young girls in exchange for food. It is reported that the Chinese army has defeated the Kashgaurian troops. The Mohammedans are threatening to carry war into China proper. The steamer Thales left Hongkong for Cooktown on January 22 with a full eom« plement of passengers and cargo.
