We understand Edward Pearce, -Esq., will take his departure by the next mail .steamer, leaving for England on the 9th March, and that it is his intention 1 to call a meeting of the electors; of the city of Wellington, at which he .will intimate that it is his intention to resign his seat in the House. We are satisfied there will be universal feelings of regret that the connection of Mr. Pearce and the electors of the city is about to he terminated; but that he has determined upon’ following the proper course there can be no doubt, and we feel sure he will, if possible, stand higher in public estimation in consequence of the step he has taken. Mr. Pearce during the six or seven years he has served the constituency has filled the position with credit and ability. Never very talkative, he has unobtrusively worked hard for the interests of the city, and by his great tact done much to smooth difficulties and to disarm that 1 senseless prejudice which has been raised against Wellington, and the social duties connected with his position he has discharged liberally and generously. Ho may rest assured that the nature of his services will not be forgotten, and at a

future time should he be willing to accept the honor the citizens will not hesitate to again ' entrust ‘ him With tlm Nctyarge of their interests.' -.We Mr. Pearce lias to visit the Wairarapa, Nelson, and Canterbury, and is likely to be absent from Wellington for about a fortnight. On his return a meeting will be convened, probably early iii March, at which he will address the electors and bid them farewell. It is understood that his colleague, Mr. 'George Hunter, will take advantage of the opportunity to say a few words in reference to what took place in Parliament last session.
