CHURCH OF ENGLAND GENERAL SYNOD.

(I’EOM OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.) Nelson, Friday. The Synod yesterday was occupied with two very long debates from 3.30 till midnight. The first arose on the Bishop of Auckland’s motion recommending the establishment of local branches of the English Temperance Society, which was agreed to. The second was on the question of religious instruction in’ public schools. The Synod resolved in favor of petitioning Government (1) to permit religious instruction to be given in schools by clergymen or ■ other authorised persons ; and (2) to give 'grants in. aid of denominational schools which come np to required standard in secular education. The other business was merely formal.
