CHURCH OF ENGLAND GENERAL SYNOD.
(PROM OUR SPECIAL REPORTER)...■_. Nelson, Monday. At the General Synod this afternoon twentyeight were present., ... A long discussion arose on the minutes,, several objections being taken. Ultimately they were confirmed after much loss, of'time. Then Archdeacon Stock moved,—That standing order No. 6 be altered, arid shall read " That there shall be no "less than three secretaries of : Synod, who shall keep regular minutes of all proceedings of Synod, and that the duty of one secretary shall be to take charge of the work done by the Synod whtn in committee." He explained that his object was to avoid the errors which occurred last session through there being no secretary to record accurate minutes of the Synod's work in committee. Mr. Rons Marten seconded the motion, which was opposed by the Dean of Chbistchurch and the Rev. Mr. Linoabd, on the ground that the. third secretary was unrieces. B»ry, as the chairman ought to take minutes if required. : ... ' . .» Archdeacon Stock having replied, pointing out that the chairman had quite enough to do without being secretary, the motion was put, and negatived on the voices. The Rev. E. Williams moved,—That after the tenth day of the sitting of the Synod no
notices of motion be received. His object was to avoid important motions being brought on so late in the session that members could not remain. He asked permission to substitute fifteenth day for tenth, but leave was refused. Archdeacon Maunsell seconded the original motion, Mr. Lusk supported, and the Bishop of DunepiN opposed the motion, which was put and lost on the voices. Archdeacon MaUNSELL moved, —That a committee be appointed to enlarge and improve he " New Zealand Hymnal," such committee to consist of the Bishop of Auckland, the Bishop of Nelson, Archdeacon Williams, Archdeacon Stock, He v. B. Dudley, O. H. Brown, and the mover. At this point the Synod rose for dinner hour. •It is expected that the whole debate on the Hymnal question will arise on this motion'; in which case the discussion is likely to be very warm. It is understood that there is a majority against the motion, but parties are believed to be pretty well balanced. The Synod will resume at half-past seven.
