A meeting of the'general committee appointed to . arrange for the English cricket match was held at the Pier Hotel last evening; Mr. Hunter, M.H.R., in the chair. Messrs. Buchanan, Bromley, and Dixon' brought up their report in reference to the selection of a team, and intimated that the twentytwo .would be chosen from the following players : Armitage, Anson, Blacklock, Bryce, Bell, C. Cross, Edmunds, Evans, Fulton, Foley, Garwood, Horwood, Hood, Houghton, Kemiedy, Lyster-Kaye, Knapp, Lockett, Mason, Mace, McKenzie, Parrington, Russell, Bobinson, W. J. Salmon, I. J. Salmon, J. A. Salmon, Speed, and Sherwill. Mr. Bromley was appointed umpire for the twenty-two, and Mr. Humphries scorer. A sub-committee, consisting, of Messrs. Pearce, M.H.E., Buchanan, and Dixon, was appointed to arrange for lunches during the. match. ' _ • The Chairman reported that Mr. Pearce and himself had that day waited upon the Hon. Mr. Bowen, in the absence of the Colonial Secvetay, to ask whether the Government would proclaim Monday, sth February, a public holiday. The Hon. Mr. Bowen had replied that there might be some objection to make it a clo3e holiday; but he anticipated no objection to closing the offices at noon on Monday certainly, as b nks and places of business doubtless would close. The meeting then adjourned. A meeting of the working committee will be held on Monday evening at the Pier Hotel. We understand the canvassers are again going round, and it is to be hoped that they will meet with liberal responses, as a good deal pf_money is yet wanted.
