' Dr. Pollen is expected here on Tuesday next to meet and confer with Manuhiri. DtMEDIN, Friday. Mrs. Scott-Siddons still continues to draw crowded audiences at the Princess Theatre. The Burns anniversary was celebrated last night by the Caledonian and Ayrshire Associations. INVEROARGILL, Friday. To-day in committing John Burns for trial at the Supreme Court for larceny of cattle at Wyndham, the Resident Magistrate said there was direct evidence to go before a jury, but it was no part of a magistrate's duty to make any further comment. To do 50 would be to interfere with the functions of the jury. The magistrate in no way convicted a. prisoner when committing him; but if he considered there was direct evidence to go before a jury, he committed, and the jury might convict the prisoner if they believed the evidence.- It was not withiu his province to say whether he believed it or not. Such being a magistrate's duty, it was not to be wondered that a great many committals to the higher Courts were: afterwards thrown out. He hoped that such would continue to be the case, and that there J always would be a great many cases thrown out of the higher Courts. R. McCowan has been appointed Clerk and I Treasurer to the Southland County Council, at a salary of £3OO a year. There were a large number of applicants. Chkistchdrch, Friday. At the Wesleyan Conference to-day permission was given to alter several circuits in Canterbury, and the following in other parts of the colony : —Manukau to be divided; Waiuku, Pukekole, and neighborhood to form a new circuit; Wangaroa to be attached to Hokianga circuit. Rangitikei circuit received permission to divide—Manuahi River to be the boundary of the circuit; the new circuit to be called the Manuahi circuit. It was agrsed to discontinue Maori work in Wellington. The Milton circuit, at present without a minister, is to be annexed to Balclutha circuit. It was agreed to send an addi-

tional minister, should one be available, to Kumara; and it was determined, if possible, to send agents to Wangarei, in the Auckland district. The number of members returned from the various districts were :—Auckland, 635 ; Taranaki and Wanganui, 371 ; Weiton, 350 ; Nelson, 342 ; Canterbury, 1004 ; Otago, 279 ; Scandinavian members, 33 ; Maori members, 379. Total, 3413. The return showed an increase in every district except in Otago, where a decrease of seventy is .*. reported, reducing general increase to 3000. Land sales yesterday amounted to £10,200. One thousand young salmon have been purchased by the Greymouth Acclimatisation Society, and will be despatched on Monday next. It is understood that the Sehvyn County Council will decide against bringing the permissive clauses of the Counties Act into force, and it is rumored that the Geraldiue County Council, who arrived at a similar decision a short time ago, intend to. try and restrict the resolution. The weather is beautifully fine for harvesting, and the yield of all crops is expected to be good. The wheat area is very large ; also of oats and barley there is a moderate area. The latter two cereals will be discolored in consequence of the late rains. Deliveries of new grain will be general about the middle of February if the fine weather continues. A considerable quantity of old oats are in course of shipment to Melbourne. The grain and produce market continues quiet, as farmers are taking advantage of fine weather to secure the crops. Some parcels of new wheat have been sold at 45.; oats, 2s. Id. for old and Is. lOd. to 2s. for new; barley, 35.; flour, £l4 ; grass seed, Bs. Trade quiet. Balclotha, Friday. At a meeting of the County Council to-day it was unanimously resolved to bring only a portion of the Act into "operation.
