Even against Briseis, '4 and sto ' i against Richmond, sto 1 each a gainst Pride * of the Hills and Calamia, 10 to 1 each against Volo and Aldinga. , ■ , Volo jumped off in front, and led for a few strides, but was quickly supplanted byDeaoon, who was followed by Pride of the Hills, Briseis, Richmond, Aldinga, Volo, and Calamia, In the’ order named. As they rounded the turn by the saddling-paddock, Pride of the Hills showed slightly in advance of Deacon, next to whom came Aldinga, who had Briseis for his immediate attendant. As they ran by 1 the river side Aldinga took up the running, the South Australian representative being second, Veto third, Richmond fourth, Deacon and . Briseis side by side, and Calamia still whipping in. Before reaching the abattoirs Pride of the Hills, who was pulling double, shot to the front again, Aldinga and Volo lying second and third, and Deacon beginning tb toil off. Pride of the Hills maintained supremacy as they passed the sheds and entered the straight, and although Aldinga Momentarily headed him at the distance, Pride took the premier position as they passed G the stand,’ Aldinga holding second position, and Volo, Briseis, Richmond, and Calamia followed Deacon dropping further and further to the rear. Something like the same order was maintained as they left the straight, though Aldinga once more assumed the lead as they ran by the river side. Pride of the Hills, however, quickly dethroned him, and at the bridge Calamia began to improve his position, going up fourth at the abattoirs, where both Richmond and Briseis seemed to be beaten 1 ,by the, pace that bad been made. Aldinga re- . tired at the sheds, and Calamia taking his place, he and Volo were left in attendance upon Pride of the Hills, who was still going ■ jyj. strong. as a lion. Entering the straight Calamia and Volo challenged the leader, who ■ responded by drawing away, and winning easily by six lengths ; Volo, who was almost ■ beaten to a standstill, about eight lengths away from Calamia ; Aldinga a had fourth, Richmond fifth, Briseis sixth, and DCacon beaten off.
