1877. fTIHE WELLINGTON ALMANACK, (PUBLISHED BY THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES V COMPANY, LIMITED.) OPINIONS OF THE PRESS. New Zealand Times, December 20, 1876.—* The twenty-1 bird edition of the ‘ Wellington Almanack is ; published to-day. Considering the length of time i that this work has been before the public of the provincial district of Wellington, it is almost needless to offer any comment on its merits. So far as the body of the publication is concerned, it contains all i matter inserted in its predecessors. The sailing directions have been most carefully revised and corrected under able supervision. The notes on the planet Mars and other astronomical matters are also a feature In the book, as is the statistical information, which has been almost entirely remodelled.- The descriptive articles on the various provinces and their resources are also worthy of notice. The official directory is nearly complete; but owing to the change consequent upon the carrying into effect of the Abolition policy, alterations will no doubt take place in the various departments during the current year. The postal and telegraph information is most complete in its character, and the memorabilia give a chronological record of events of importance for the year. The gardeners* chronicle has been supervised by Mr. Jeffs, which is a sufficient guarantee for its value and usefulness. The most important feature irtthe Almanack is the addition of a street directory, which has been compiled at much trouble and expense; and will undoubtedly be of great service to. the mercantile community. The country directory is also very complete, and will no doubt be found most useful. The advertisements have been put in such a form as to really make them a trade directory, which cannot fail to be an additional advantage to advertisers, as well as a convenience to the public. A map showing the boundaries of the new counties and ridings, is presented with the Almanack, and also portraits of Sir Julius Vogel and the late Dr. Featherston, with short sketches of the public career of each. Con sideling the price of the book, which is only 2s. 6d., it should meet with a large amount of public support. It can be obtained of all booksellers and stationers throughout the province. Evening Argus. December 21. 1876. We are in receipt of the ‘ Wellington Almanack for 1877, published by the New Zealand Times Company. It is a very large edition, most creditably compiled and printed. The information contained is almost encyclopedic. The frontispiece is a neatly executed map showing the county boundaries, in accordance with the Counties Act, 1876 ; and further on are two portraits—one of the late Dr. Featherston and one of Sir Julius Vogel, with a short sketch of the public career of each. There is statistical information with regard to population, imports, exports, and revenue of the colony for the last nine years, vital and other statistics ; descriptive articles on the late provinces, postal and telegraphic information. An improvement is made in the directory, which this year gives the names of the streets in which the citizens reside. This is a great advantage, and will enable people more readily to find out ‘ who’s who.’ Altogether the Almanack is a most useful reference book, and we may quote their own prefatory remarks as being in accordance with our opinion that ‘in completeness of detail and usefulness of character the present edition surpasses its predecessors, and will be found the most reliable work of its kind in the provincial district of Wellington, while it contains much valuable information not usually found in an almanack.’ ” Evening Post, December 21. 1876.—" We have received a copy of the ‘Wellington Almanack,’ published at the New Zealand Times office. The volume is more than usually bulky, and contains some new features in addition to the customary mass of information." . Wanganui Chronicle— “ The ‘Wellington Almanack,' previously alluded to, is a carefully compiled and very ample reference book. Its issue for 1877 is by far the best we have yet seen, and contains an amount of well selected and valuable information which few works of the kind attempt. . . . The improvement upon former editions is very marked in some respects. There is a carefully prepared map of the colony as divided under the Counties system; and lifelike pictures and interesting historical records of the present and late Agent-General, are also included in this specially interesting portion of the work. We congratulate the publishers upon the excellent work which they have succeeded in compiling, and which should be valued proportionately by all classes of readers throughout the colony. We anticipate for the ‘ Wellington Almanack ’ an active demand.” Wanganui Herald, December 28, 1876. —“We have received from the publishers the ‘ Wellington Almanack ’ for the coming year,.a valuable and comprehensive publication. In the directories are included the names and residences of settlers on this coast as far North as Hawera, and containing as it does a large variety of information for gardeners, mariners, merchants, and settlers in general, renders it one of the most valuable publications of Us kind in the colony. The book also contains the portraits of the late Dr. Featherston and Sir Julius Vogel, the past and present Agents-General for the colony." Lyttelton Tims, January 1, 1877.-‘‘We have received a copy of the ‘Wellington Almanack’ from the publishers Besides the usual information to be found in publications of the kind, the ‘Wellington Almanack’ contains portraits and sketches of Sir J. Vogel and Dr. Featherston, and a small map of the North Island counties is prefixed to the volume.” AGENTS FOB THE ‘‘’WELLINGTON ALMANACK.” Town— Mr; J. Watt, Willis-street: Messrs. Lyon and Blair.
