On Saturday afternoon a match was played on the Ba«in Reserve, between the team that represented Wellington in the late Interprovincial match at Nelson and eleven allcomers. It was generally thought that another " dressing" was in store for the representative team ; but on this occasion they signalised themselves by giving their opponents an unmerciful drubbing, which seemed to rather astonish not only the team themselves but the public also. Looking at the respective teams on paper, the all-comers certainly looked the stronger ; but in this, as in many other cases, appearances were deceptive. The captain of the all-comers winning the toss, elected to take the field, Knapp and Foley, as at Nelson, being deputed to pioneer the representatives, but with considerably more success, especially the former, who saw most of his confreres lose their wickets. He played in his usually steady and effective style, and well earned the top score, viz., 27. Armitage followed, with 17 to his name. The innings closed foratotalof 108. During thecourseof the game three splendid catches were made respectively by J. A, Sa'mon in the slips, Ksnnedy at shortleg (a one-handed .catch, which disposed of Garwood when he was well set), and the other by Blacklock. The fielding of the team was passable, with the exception of Speed, who shaped very badly. The innings of the all-comera commenced in anything but a satisfactory manner. Bryce opened the bowling, and with his fourth ball lowered Mace's leg stump. . The two first balls in the next over proved fatal to Kennedy gad LJ. Salmon—3 out for 1. Mason filled the vacancy, and negotiated the remainder of the over. One to Blacklock off Armitage brought Mason opposite that bowler, and his first ball scattered his stumps— 4 for 2, and Lockett took guard and hit Bryce away for 3 ; in attempting to repeat the performance, he lost his middle stump. With the exception of Speed and Blacklock the team shaped badly at the bowling, which, however, was very good. The fielding of the representative men was very fair, but not up to Nelson form. McKenzie made a splendid one hand catch, which disposed of J. A. Salmon. The last wicket fell for a total of 47. As this left the all-comers 61 behind their opponents, they followed their innings, and when stumps were drawn had lost 5 wickets for 36, Blacklock and Speed again stemming the tide. When they got together there were 5 out for 10, but by steady play the total was brought up to 36. As the match is so decidedly in favor of the Interprqvincial team, it will not be continued.
