The time-ball may be used to-day for rating chronometers. A chronometer true on Greenwich time would show 12h. 30min. when the ball drops. Any difference Is error, plus or minus, of the chronometer. Amongst the shipping in port the first day of the new year was kept as a strict holiday, not the smallest amount of work in the way of loading or discharging the vessels being attempted. The display of rockets and the firing of cannon which commenced at the last moment of the old year was indulged in to the fullest extent, and as the people of each vessel vied with each other as to who should fire off the last rocket or gnn, the illuminations, which generally last not more than an hour, were kept np till almost daylight. The ship St Leonards had all her yardarms manned and illuminated with blue rockets, the effect being very pretty The show of bunting during the day was limited as owing to a strong wind which blew, the vessels at the southern side of the wharf were unable to display any. The only vessels which made any attempt at a display of bunting were the ship Ocean Mail a few of the small craft, and the steamers Agnes and Stella. The latter boat looked very pretty, her bright new bunting, which she was decorated with from forward to aft, showing off to great advantage, which was further heightened by the little steamer having all her handsome polished woodwork turned to the gaze of the passers-by. The interior of her saloon and the cabins were tastefully decorated with flowers and evergreens, and both above and below she loeked extremely well, , . _ Tire Union Company’s s.s. Tanpo, Captain Carey, arrived in harbor yesterday forenoon at 11 o’clock. She was the bearer of the San Francisco mall, and consequently no time was lost on the way down from Onehunga. as may be judged from the fact that she made a splendid trip to this port of slightly over fortyone hours—a run which we believe has never been equalled before. She left Onehunga at 6.30 p.m. on Sunday last, and was off New Plymouth at 7 o’clock next morning. Remained there only three-quarters of an hour, and then proceeded on to Nelson, where she arrived at 8.30 pm. same day. Came out again on the same tide at 10 p.m., and was at Picton wharf at 5.30 a m. yesterday: delayed but half an hour, and then came on to this port, arriving as above. She proceeded South at 3.30 p.m. The following steamers left the wharf yesterday afternoon Hangatira, for Napier; Manawatu, for ■Wanganui; Wallace, for Nelson and West Coast; Stormbird, for Wanganui; Napier, for Foxton; and Lyttelton, for Blenheim. The s.s. Stella was engaged yesterday in taking in a quantity of Australian timber for the Brothers, to be used in the construction of a landing-place, tramway, houses, and also in the tower of the new lighthouse. The s.s. Tararna sailed for Sydney via the West Coast yesterday evening shortly after 6 o’clock. The s.s. ilawea will sail North to-day. The s.s. Nemesis, sister ship to the St. Osyth, left Southampton for Melbourne via the Cape on. the 18th November. She Is due there this week. The ship Jessie Headman was taken round to the Patent Slip yesterday morning, where she will have her bottom cleaned and coated with patent antifonling composition. The ship Avalanche, which finished discharging yesterday, will be the next vessel to go on it.. The B.H. Kiwi sailed for the East Coast late last night. She will first go down to Flaxbourne, and thence will proceed on her wool-gathering operations up the coast of this Island. She will not call at Napier. , , When the mail left, the Leicester, 1309 tons, had just finished loading at London for Wellington. The Adamant, 815 tons, and Hakaia, 1022 tons, were loading.
