(per press agency.) Dunedin, Friday. At a meeting of directors of the Colonial Bank yesterday Mr. Donald Reid was balloted out as retiring director. The present candidates for the, vacancy are the Hon. W, H. Reynolds and the Hon. Matthew Holmes. The Guardian states that a man named Smith, resident at Caversham, has become heir to a fortune of £400,000, through the death of a London relative. The council of the Otago Convention has prepared a synopsis showing the position ofcounties which do not choose to bring the whole of the Counties Act into operation. The educational part, of the Presbyterian trust fund is now in a position to support another professorship in the Otago University, besides -that ;of Professor McGregor. The Synod will be asked next month to designate a chair to be established. William Walker, charged with having assaulted Hetty Layard on Christmas Day, with intent to do her grievous bodily barm, was to-day committed for trial at the .next session otthe Supreme Court. j " Auckland, Friday. At the Harbor Board meeting to-day a copy of a letter to the Government was read, praying that the time of the arrival of the mail steamer be altered so as not fall on Sunday. The City Council, after a, long discussion yesterday, carried a resolution for scrutiny of the city accounts, by five to three. Grahamstown, Friday. • It is stated here on tolerably good authority that important changes are to be made immediately in,the daily pioming journals published, in Auckland. Monday next will see the amalgamation of the Cross and Herald, to the extinguishment of the former. Mr. Horton, who recently purchased the Cross, has joined Messrs. Wilson in partnership, and the CrosS’ will be discontinued, the* Herald enlarged, and the Weekly Herald incorporated with the Weekly Ncics. The idea once entertained to make the Cross an evening paper has been abandoned. The literary staff of the enlarged Herald will be .augmented by the accession of Luckie and other writers, and the practical staff of the Cross will mostly be taken on the Herald. Mr. Horton joins Messrs. Wilson as full partner. It is stated that the amalgamation has been urged by prominent advertisers, who have given a bond not to advertise in any other morning paper for twelve months. These are the main features of the new arrangement.
