(PER PRESS AGENCY.) Kelson, Thursday.

A fatal accident occurred this morning to Mr. Marsden, an old settler in the Waimea. He was driving to town when the horse took fright at the train and bolted. Marsden was thrown out, but did not appear to be hurt. He helped to unharness the horse, led it to an adjoining stable, and a few minutes later fell down dead.

Dunedin, Thursday. The Otago County Council will meet on 4th January. The Wairau riding, in Southland, is the only riding in Otago for which no candidate will come forward.

The total amount subscribed in Otago for the Bulgarian relief fund is £2OO. The yield of gold, as shown by the escort for the past month, is 85670z5. Captain Campbell-Walker delivers an address before the Otago Institute to-night on forestry. At a meeting of the Council of the Otago University held to-day, Dr. Coughney’s resignation as Professor of Anatomy was accepted. He complained that he had been thwarted by the Council in bis efforts to found a medical school. This statement was denied in the resolution accepting his resignation. The following tenders were sent in for a channel for the harbor :—Proudfoot, alternative methods, first, £88,950 ; second, £91,875 ; third, £91,000 ; fourth, £105,200. Henderson and Ferguson, £126,794, each method. McKay and Levy, first, £99,200 ; second, £127,700 ; third, £139,800 ; old method, £74,590. The tenders were referred for the engineer’s report. A hundred and eighty pounds were sent to the Bulgarians’ relief. The body of Captain Lindsay, of the William Ackers, has been washed ashore near the wreck.

The fire brigade are practising vigorously for the approaching contests. Invercargill, Thursday.

The inquiry into the cause of the loss of the barque William Ackers closed to-day, with the following findings : —That the loss of the vessel was occasioned through the captain keeping his vessel too close to the laud ; and the loss of the captain and seven -men was mainly, if not entirely, the result of the deck cargo getting adrift and destroying the boats.

The Resident Magistrate's Court has been occupied from two till half-past six o’clock hearing a charge against Calderwood for a murderous assault upon Hugh Duddy. The latter was able to appear in court and give evidence, although still very weak, his head being bandaged up. The facts as previously narrated were brought out in evidence, and Calderwood was remanded till Saturday, when another witness will be brought forward.
