At the meeting of the Education Board a proposal was announced for the establishment of a Girl's Training and High School. £250 will be spent in preparing the necessary building. A committee has been formed and a prospectus issued. The school will also be for training female teachers ; to open about the middle of January. Reader Wood is giving free Christmas meat to the poor. At the annual meeting of the City Council to-day the Mayor's salary was voted at £l5O. The Mayor's annual report showed great progress in waterwoi'ks. He recommended that the water from the new works be brought direct to the pump wells, and not allowed to remain stagnant in ponds. Hurst was elected Mayor by 1026; Cosgrave, 696. Grahamstown, Wednesday. The Mayoral election resulted in the return of McDonald, with 481 votes, against 169 for Kilgour, who it was understood was brought out by Grey’s party, with which the defeated candidate has been prominently associated. Napier, Wednesday. At the second trial to-day of Paul for larceny of a cheque which he found at the Spit, prisoner was acquitted. In the jury’s opinion prisoner did not intend to appropriate the said cheque. Late last night the trial of Maney v. Hood concluded. It was an action for the recovery of possession of land which had been sold to both plaintiff and defendant by F. B. Reid, but defendant’s conveyance had not been registered. He pleaded that plaintiff had knowledge of the conveyance. The jury found that plaintiff had no such knowledge. On the other findings there will be argument in banco to-morrow. The Judge expressed an opinion that the verdict was in favor, in effect, of the plaintiff. He leaves by the Rangatira. Hokitika, Wednesday.

Hudson’s five hundred acre lease was sold by auction at the Waste Lands Board to-day, and realised £527, the whole being knocked down to Young on behalf of Messrs. Hudson, Leslie, and Young. A further eight hundred lease was applied for, and granted to Leslie, Young, and party, subject to survey and usual conditions. The Virginia Consols Company was formed on this lease, but was held in abeyance in consequence of the lease' being jumped. Thirteen thousand shares in this company have already been applied for. Daniel Braniff, W. Wood, and J. Woods were charged at the Police Court this morning, on four informations, with having an illicit still in their possession. The case was remanded till Friday. A large quantity of apparatus was seized. Peter White, of the Commercial Hotel, committed suicide this morning in the cemetery by shooting himself over the grave of his children. The supposed cause is domestic grievances. Blenheim, Wednesday, Alfred George Pell was elected Mayor by 174; Litchfield, 83. Christchurch, Wednesday. The election for Mayor took place to-day. Jas. Gapes polled 680, and C. T. Ick, 515. John W. Ellen was elected for Kaiapoi, and Dr. Rouse for Lyttelton. Workmen, in dressing white stone for the girls’ school to-day, found two shark’s teeth and one dolphin’s tooth embedded in the stone, all in a beautiful state of preservation, the enamel being bright and unblemished. The second attempt to organise a crew for the Nelson regatta has failed. Dunedin, Wednesday.

A telegram was received from Hobarton announcing the arrival of the Union Company’s steamer Wanaka this morning. After coaling, she leaves to-morrow for Port Chalmers.
