BOAT RACE.

A boat race-'-was rowed-on Saturday afternoon' between a brew chosen from tbc- employes of the Theatre’'Royal and one frdni-the office - of-this paper, the course being from Kaiwarra Ito the Qu ?tow ; rowed in :a- clinker-built,batswing boatikindly’ • lent by- the - Star Glub~f or; the;occasion, and the -Times *orevv iri one of the same description lent by the Wellington Glub,.„ ,The last-named cboat I only lately* shipped from Australia; and : leaked .a' good deal,, in I .cbna'eqnence of which 1 she was beached 1 at" Kaiwarra and emptied; The ’race was to /have come off at two o’clock, but .there was’a want of “punctuality in the'" arrangements, and a start was; not made until about three quarters of>an hour, after‘'the appointed- time. The Times Imen; were ibe first ,to make -ii start..for.Kjiiwarra, and were followed in about half an.hour by the Theatre crow. . A number, of mewspaper men. and-friends were at -Kaiwarra tp give their creW'.a parting cheer. The Theatre boat ;was followed by, a > Star crew,- with-Mr. Webb, who acted ,as starter,-in the absences of Mr.
Leary, whp,Towing-to a mistake of the crew, which was -to have -taken-him up,- was; treated with unintentional ■ discourtesyA whaleboat of the-Wellington-'-Club also ; went- up to KaiWarra, and 'adcompahied the’race. As soon as -Mr. Webb arrived at'Kaiwarra,Alexa.nder and ’Muir,’‘the^-'rival' 1 captains, tossed!fbi- ’choice of water, the former Whining ahd.taking the inside for the Theatre crew.,, At the’startAlexander, (stroke Of the theatricals), went off with a burst, and m tKe lumpy .water held.it for;- a short distance, but .jVimfs/'Bteadi, swingfldr'the paperstameri soou tbld, .'ind tbo TillKs’ incu gradually forged Alexander spurted three or four .times to recover-tiie ground lost, but without, avaib’altbbugh number three in the.TiMEs’ boat was rowing all arms, and number two app.eared : baked by the time the baths were reaiched. Bow in the Times’ boat worked like a 1 man, and stuck to Muir all through the race. : The cox of the Times’ boat perhaps deserves/more credit than any other member of the crew, as he steered a splendid course. Number three iif i burst up early in the race, and although Alexander pulled hard all through, yet there 1 was not the ..proper,) awing.,in: his stroke,- pulling. aa .he ; did' altogether with his arma, and bucketing* a . good deal. - At the ;baths the Times’ ' ’crew " were .leading by a‘couple of lengths, which, at-i the-finish was increased to betweenffivnaiid six. • ' ( A number of theatricals and : prbssiain : were out in boats to watch the struggle, and a large crowd assembled on the wharf and the steamera alongside, greeted the ■victoHous' , ''crew™in the usual manner. 1 Mr, Gair, of the Star Club, acted as judge. !
