WATERING THE STREETS.

TO THE EDITOE OF THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES. ; Slß,—l observe that the Christchurch Corporation have struck. a rate of 3|d. in the £ for.: watering the streets,, and as it is not at all unlikely that the ratepayers of Wellington may , be also..called upon to pay a similar rate, I think the following proposal might be the means (if’ a rate be required) of reducing it to a fraction of a penny;—Let the Corporation arrange with the tramway people to water the streets through which the tramway passes. This could be easily done several times in the day in a few ■ minutes by’using a waggon on which might be placed, say, ‘four tanks, or 1609 : : gallons of water,with the usual perforated pipes bn each side of the waggon, - and connected with a steam-pipe from the tramcar. engine. The steam thus applied would* have piower enough to eject the water right across the street on both sides, so that in ten minutes . - Lambton-quay, Willis-street, and ; Mannersstreet would be thoroughly well watered. I think the shopowners would acknowledge'this system to be a great boon, while it would un- - doubtedly be a marked saving to the ratepayers. —I am, &c., " . / , . A Ratefatee.
