(from the press agency.) Dunedin, Thursday.

The Spring Meeting of the Jockey Club opened to-day. There was about 3000 persons present. The weather at first was favorable, but during the afternoon frequent showers fell. The attendance'was large, and considerable excitement was manifested over several of the races.

Maiden Plate, 40 sovs.—Dead Heat, 1 ; Miss Elswick, 2 ; Wild Dear, 3. Spray and Glencoe also rah. Dead Heat won easily. Time, 2min. 51Jsecs. St. Andrew’s Handicap, 100 sovs.; two miles.—Swanson’s Sir William and Beab’s Fox were scratched. After a good race, King Phillip came in first, a length ahead of Fishook, Kingfisher third ; the others out of the race. Time, Smins. 46secs.

Selling Race. Six entries. Pollock’s Rosiua was scratched, Flying Beauty, 1 ; Alice, 2 ; Kathleen, 3. Capital contest between the two first-named horses. Time, 2mins. 56|secs. Winning horse sold- to H. Scott, for £42.

Spring Handicap—One mile. Twelve entries. Flying Beauty, Dead Heat, Fishhook, and Tadmor were scratched.' Walters’ Isaac Walton, Ist ; Haphazard, 2nd ; Steamer, 3rd ; Rob Roy, 4th ; all the other horses a long way behind. Isaac Walton won by one length; exciting race, and positions of horses changed often. Time, 2min. 21Jsecs. Handicap Trotting Race—Three started. Black Boy, Ist; Snip, 2nd; Mjstery, 3rd. The favorites Polly and Major ran well, but Polly broke several times, and they were too heavily handicapped. Time, 9miu. 41 Jsece. Benevolent Scurry Race.—This was the best contested race of the daj, and was won by Smith’s Alice, closely followed by McKay’s Glencoe, and Mr. Hastings’s Miss Elswick had a good third position. The other entry was Bell’s Kathleen, which also ran well.
