The time-baU may be used to-day for rating chronometers. A chronometer true on Greenwich time would show 12h. 90mln. when the ball drops. Any difference is error, plus or minus, of the chronometer. The s.s. Murray will sail for Nelson, Westport, Greymontb. and Hokitika this afternoon. The s.s. Otago will sail for Melbourne and Hobarton. via the South, this afternoon. The s.s. Stormbird and the p.s. Manawatu will arrive here this morning from Wanganui. The former is advertised to sail again for the same port to-day, and the latter on Friday. The s.s. Tui, Captain Bonner, did not arrive here from Lyttelton and Kaikoora till 4 o'clock yesterday morning. She sailed from Lyttelton at 7 p.m. on the 27th and arrived at Kalkoura at 4 a m. on the 28th ; left atft.3oa.m..bnton coming across the Strait avery dense fog was experienced, and afte~ groping about in it for some time sufficiently shallow water was found to anchor In. and the Tui was accordingly brought up till 2 a.m, yesterday, when it cleared away, andrthe place where they had anchored was found to be just off Island Bay. The Tui sailed for Foxton at 3.45 p.m. yesterday. The p.s. Lyttelton, which left the wharf at 5 o’clock on Tuesday evening had, owing to the heavy fog which prevailed, to bring up at Soames Island, from whence abe sailed at an early hour yes'erday morning. The schooners Kaituna and Arthur Wakefield, from Pelorns Sound, arrived here yesterday afternoon. The cotter Dido, Captain Shilling. left Blenheim at 3 o’clock on Tuesday afternoon, and arrived here at 5 o’clock pm. yesterday. Experienced thick foggy weather with light airs till 12.30 a.m. yesterday, when a light breeze sprang up and brought her into port. The Dido brings a full cargo of wool and other produce. She will sai tomorrow night for Blenheim. The s.s. Hfnemoa sailed for the East Coast yesterday. She will make Napier her first port of call, thence she will await orders from Wellington where to proceed to. It Is believed she will visit Cape Marla Van Diemen, for which place she has got a number of iron bark piles to be used in the construction of a new lighthouse there The topvail schooner Clio, for Moerakl, and Zlor, for Dunedin, via Peioms Sound, sailed yesterday forenoon. The s.s. Kangatira sailed for Napier direct yesterday at 0.30 p.m. Prior to departure she was taken up on the Patent Blip, where she received a coat of patent anti-fouling composition. It is stated that the cable steamer Agnes will proceed to-morrow to pick up the cable buoy which bos been reported as having drifted down to the mouth of Pallaser Bav, The other buoy which was attached to the cable has not been seen for some time, and it is now supposed that It has been drawn under the water by the force of the heavy tide which runs, in that portion of the Strait whe-e it was fixed, at the rate of from six to seven knots, an 1 being unable to stand the pressure put upon it has collapsed and sank to the bottom.
The s.s. Napier arrived here yesterday at 4 a.m. from Foxton, which place she left at 0 o’clock the previous morning, but meeting with a heavy fog she was obliged to come to an anchor off the Pinnacle, Where she remained till It cleared off early yesterday morning.
