The steamer Wellington, which arrived here yesterday morning, brought the crew and captain and his wife of the Oreti from Plcton. An inquiry .into this cause of the wreck was held at Pioton, and the evidence’taken has been forwarded to Mr. Seed, Secretary of Cnstoms.-bnt at present we are unable to publish it, as the affair stands we mightsaysusjudice.it being not decided whether any further action should be taken or not. - On questioning the captain and crew, who of course are rather reticent in giving information, we learn that the Oreti bad anchored in Queen Charlotte Sound, and on Saturday afternoon she got under way: had light airs ail the afternoon, when shortly after 10 o’clock the ebb tide set in, and it being nearly a perfect calm the vessel drifted helpessly down to the rocks broadside on, .Every attempt was made to wear her round, but in vain. ■ Her heel was' the first to touch White Hocks. ' Immediately after striking a hedge was run out, and all hands, hove. on it with the windlass; (but the tide had receded too fast, and after trying all their might to get her, off, it was, found impossible to move her, and that she bad settled' down on the rocks. A fresh N.W. wind then sprang up, and it was decided that the captain, his wiie, and three seamen should go in the boat to Mr. Turner’s ” house in the Sound, the cook and the mate to remain on the rock. After they had left, two Maori whaleboats, fully.manned,>islted.the wreck, and offered to take the two men left behind away.. They how r ever refused to leave the vessel until the captain returned, as she was" not abandoned. .One of the boats then left for Mr. Turner’s house, and brought back Captain Nelson, and the vessel was then abandoned, as nothing farther could be,done to save her; At 4 o’clock on Sunday .morning the shipwrecked people left Mr. Turner’s house, where they had been ... very hospitably entertained, for Pioton; but falling in with the schooner Colonist, they were taken on board and brought there. Messrs. McMeckan, Blackwood, and Co.’s s.s. Eingarooma. Captain John McLean, arrived here from Melbourne, via the West Coast, yesterday evening at 9.30. She left the Sandridge Hallway Pier at 2 p.m. of the 18th, cleared the Heads at 7.35 p.m., and passed the Sisters next day at 11.30 a.m,; experienced light variable winds across, and arrived at Hokitika at 7 a.m. of tbe.23rd; .left at 1.45 p m. same day, and reached Oreymouth at- 3.40 p.m.; sailed same day.for Nelson, and arrived thereat noon on the 24th; was under way again at 1.30 p.m., and came through the French Pass three hoars afterwards, arriving here as above. Experienced variable winds with fine weather up the Coast. We thank Mr. Chatfleld (the purser) for prompt and safe delivery of our flies, and also for report. The Hingarooma is advertised to sail for, Melbourne, via the South, to-day. ; _ The .Union. Company’s-stoamer Wellington, from • Northern ports, arrived here yesterday at 8 a.m; She left the Manuiau at lO a.m, on the 20th Inst., and arrived at. Taranaki at 6 a.m. next day; left at 6 o’clock same morning, and reached Nelson at 9 o'clock that night; sailei) at 10 a.m. on the 23rd; and arrived at Picton at 7 p.m.; left at 3 o’clock yesterday morning, arriving here as above. Fine weather prevailed throughout the passage. She left again for the South at 3.16 yesterday afternoon. The . Government steamer Stella had not put in an appearance here at the time of our going to press this morning. She is now twelve days out from Adelaide, 1 Tbe ketch Falcon, Captain Fisk, left -Blenheim at . 10.30 a.m. yesterday, and arrived hero at half-past 6: o’clock last night. Experienced northerly wind across. The ship Waimea hauled out into the stream yesterday afternoon. The ship Jessie Headman will take up the berth vacated by her.. - - : The barque Australind sailed for- Newcastle and the schooner Marion for Lyttelton yesterday afternoon.' The ketch Elizabeth, 1 ' Captain Haft, from the Pelorus Sound, bound to Patea with a cargo of timber, got on the North f Spit at Patea on Sunday last as she was entering the harbor. She was got off: on Monday night, apparently with no damage; but; Captain Short, her owner, received a telegram"yes-, teiday stating that:the- vessel was making water.; Probably an inquiry and jsurvey will be held on the, vessel before proceeding to sea. > The schooner Theresa, Captain Bissett, from "Wanganui, arrived in ballast yesterday-morning. ; The steamer Napier, from/Foxton; arrived here, yesterday.
