Steam was got up on the s.s. Stormbird. and about 10.45 a.tn. she left the wharf to tow her in, and although there was a strong nor’ wester blowing, the little steamer made light work of the rather heavy drag, and before two o'clock both had entered the harbor. The Stormnird steamed right up to the wharf with the vessel behind, and placing the tow rope on the wharf the May was in a short time in the old berth which she vacated some six monthsago. ShecomesfromHongkong and Foochow, and as usual brings a full cargo to her owners. Her present voyage has been a long tedious one, occuying as it did 97 days, light contrary winds were the cause of the delay, and the regular monsoons were conspicuous by their absence. From the captain’s logbook, we find that she left Foochow on the 14th July, with northerly winds, lasting till the 18th, when they veered to the south, holding there - till the 21st. Then a hard gale from the N.W. was met with, hauling to the N.E., raising a high sea, which now and then tumbled on board In large quantities. On the 23rd the wind had worked round to the east with a high confused sea, causing the vessel to strain heavily. This kind of weather held away till the 27th, when the wind became moderate from the eastward; afterwards light S.E. and E, with fine weather and calms, varied occasionally with rain squalls. All through September a series of the most provoking weather was met with; very light winds, chiefly from the cast, and calms being experienced. The first day of the next month brought with it a fresh S.E. trade wind, which increased to a very heavy gale with a high running sea. The gale however only lasted for a few days, when the doldrums were again fallen in with. On the 12th of October a large number of waterspouts were sighted. Light easterly wind was prevalent from the 15th till making Cape Egmont on the 18th. Down the coast the same weather was met with till in the Strait on Wednesday night, when a heavy wind from the N.W. with thick weather came on, continuing so till picked up and towed into port by the s.s. Stormbird. * A handsome fore-and-aft schooner named the Marion put in an appearance here this morning from Kaipara, with a cargo of kauri timber for Mr. E. Pearce. She is an Auckland built craft, having been constructed by Ross and Duthie of that city, and is quite new, having only left the stocks some six months ago. Since then she has made but three voyages, two to the Norfolk Islands, and this her present one. She left Kaipara on Friday last; experienced fine weather and was becalmed off Cape Egraont for three days. The only strong wind encountered in the trip was on Wednesday night when outside in the Strait, where a heavy N.W. breeze and thick rainy weather set in. She is announced for sale by Mr, E. Pearce. The p.s. Manawatu, Captain Harvey, arrived here from Wanganui at 9.15 a.m. yesterday. She left Wanganui at 9,45 p.m. on Wednesday: took the schooner Theresa bound for this port in tow, but on proceeding the tow line parted and the schooner had to be left behind; crossed the bar at 10.55 p.m., and arrived here as above. Experienced fresh N.W. wind throughout. She returned to Wanganui at 5 o’clock last evening.
