The insurances on the Pretty Jane; which struck on the bar .at Gisborne yesterday, are : —South British, £2500 ; New Zealand-£2500.' Both sums partially re-insured. The balance of risk was sustained by. the owners.Palmerston North, Tuesday. Medical examina ; tion showed that apoplexy was, the cause of death, and a verdict to that effect was returned. Tuesday. There was an accident on the Mount Rochfort railway to-day. John Williams,-a well-' known resident, while blasting, timber , got seriously injured. - His whole frame was shattered. . Christchurch, Tuesday. Darrell’s new drama, “Transported for Life,” was produced for the first time here last night to a crowded house. The performance was a marked success. A youth named Knibbs was brought up today charged with stealing letters from a private, box' at the Post Offices by [means of skeleton keys. He was detected in the act. The case was remanded. ! - 1 The notorious Dr. Turner has again escaped. He was out on bail on a charge of stealing a coat from the City Hotel, and did not answer to his name, at the Magistrate’s Court to-day. It is believed he left Lyttelton in female attire by steamer a few days ago.; ' A woman named Whittington dropped down dead from heart disease during service in the Wesleyan Chapel. - Dunedin, Tuesday. 1 The hull of the new steam dredge-Vulcan was' Successfully - -launched ' this afternoon. There were about 3000 spectators, and the demonstration was of an enthusiastic character.'
