CRICKET MATCH.

STAR CLUB V. A. C. -FORCE; , The opening match of the Star Cricket Club was played on Saturday on the Basin Reserve. The ground, was in fair condition-but rather bumpy, it being impossible ,to ..get a .really: good wicket until some improvement is made. Edmunds acted as captain for the Force,'and winning the toss took his men into the field. Plav commenced a little after, one .o’clock, J. Salmon and Mason first' handling the willow against the bowling of .Gouge and Foley. The first over was taken by Gouge from the southern end, and the batsmen for the' first few overs played strictly on the defensive. Mason opened fire with a pretty , cut right from the shoulder, and in the following over Salmon made a fine drive. Both players remained as fixtures for a considerable time, 20 and 30 appearing on the board, but shortly afterwards Gouge upset Salmon’s timber yard, he having scored 14 in his usual fine style. Russell* succeeded Salmon, but was soon caught by Dutton off Foley, the. two wickets going down for 44. I. Salmon next appeared on the scene, but after scoring 3 and 1 was cleaned bowled by a regular trimmer from. Dutton. Garwood then pat in an appearance, but immediately retired to the tent with material for egg-flip. Lockett followed, making a nice cut for 2, and then a splendid drive for 3. Up to' this time Mason had been 'scoring steadily, but succumbed to a “yorker” fromDutton. - Bond, who came next, played steadily for ,10, and was then neatly caught by Turner off Withers. The residuum of the team were easily disposed off, Lockett carrying his bat out for a well played innings of 26. At the close of the innings the Stars’, score made the respectable total of 105. The following is the bowling analysis of the A. C. Club: —

Edmunds .. 2.0 2 0 Z After a few minutes interval, two of our gallant defenders appeared at the wickets, Messrs. I. Salmon and Lockett taking up the bowling, the former from the southern end. The bowling was too good from both ends for much scoring, both bowlers getting a wicket to their credit in the first two overs. Foley made a splendid drive for 4, and on coming in appeared in such good form that it looked as if the fielders were to have some leather hunting. He was, however, run out most unfortunately, J. Salmon’s fielding on this occasion boing one of the smartest bits of play during the afternoon. Langtrey, who succeeded, was clean bowled by Lockett for 1 ; and Edmunds, who came next, together with Gouge, made a very fine stand, both playing steadily. When the score stood at 24 the former gentleman’s leg stump was dropped by Salmon, and he had to retire. Withers was next man, and after he had made a fine drive for 3, Garwood took up . the bowling at the northern end, the score being 40. ‘With his second ball he clean bowled Withers, and in the same over disposed of Lyons, who came next. The Ist innings soon came to a close, the last wicket —Turner’s —being placed to the ' credit of Garwood, the total score being 45. Club again took the willow, but the bowling was again altogether too much for them, four wickets being lost for 11 runs. The most noticeable feature in the match was Garwood’s bowling, he taking 6 wickets for 1 run, a feat very seldom accomplished.
