The death-rate for the month of September shows a total of thuteen, against eighteen for the corresponding quarter of last year. Captain Turnbull, who surveyed the steamer Matau, telegraphs that she is not much damaged, and can be got off with little trouble. Grey has telegraphed to Lusk to go to Wellington. Lusk goes to Wellington on Saturday. The Auckland Presbytery to-day sustained the call to the Rev. Mr. Maurice from the Hokitika congregation. Alexandra, Wednesday. Manuhiri, with all the WaikaUs, from the Kuiti, have arrived at Kopua. He takes his permanent residence there. Tawhaio, with his people, returned to Hikurangi to-day. Napier, Wednesday. The “ Mirror of England” was opened last night to an immense house. Nelson, Wednesday. Simbnsens’ Opera Company are playing here to crowded houses. Last night “Massaniello", was a great success. To-night is the Company’s last here, as they leave to-morrow for Christchurch, where they play on Saturday. Westport, Wednesday. • The efforts to haul off the Matau by the Luna this morning were unsuccessful, she only moved ten feet.’ The Matau is still high and dry at low water, j • Hokitika, Wednesday, . Ah’ Wong, after a ; trial of three 1 days for -criminal assault upon a child of tender years’ at Greymouth/ was acquitted. The 'prisoner underwent two previous trials at Greymouth. An open air meeting will be held to-morrow to petition the Colonial Government bo purchase the-Teremakau punt and erect abridge over the river at the locality.
