PROVISION FOR SICK AND SUPERANNUATED TEACHERS.
TO THE EDITOR OP THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES. Sir, —Mr, Lee brought the case of Mr. Dixon,-the-invalided teacher at Marton, before the Board,, and- the teachers as have taken ah active interest in raising a fund for his temporary' benefit. ’But the ’associated teachers must also urge upon the Government the giving a recognised status to schoolmasters, and making some permanent provision for those who are disabled or superannuated. That practical legislator, Mr. Swanson, has some queer notions. about the duties that schoolmasters may be got to discharge ; but they are rather antiquated, though not nearly so onerous as those imposed upon the teachers in New England some two hundred years ago ! In some of the towns in that State the schoolmaster had: “to act as a Court messenger, to serve summonses, to lead the choir on Sundays, to ring the bell for public worship, to dig the graves, to take charge of the school, and perform other occasional duties.”—l am, &0., An Aucklander.
