The caucus of Otago members yesterday arose thus. A meeting was convened to consider the question of the wharves and quays reserves. The real intention of the meeting was no doubt known to those in the secret, and accordingly only the M icandrewites attended. No sooner had the meeting come together than the question upon which it was called was postponed by unanimous consent, and those present entered upon the consideration of the county question. On this the feeling of unanimity was touching. It was carried nem. con. without discussion, that there should be but one county, to be named Otago, and then the meeting separated immediately. Unfortunately the representatives of some of the mining districts hold quite opposite views to those arrived at by the meeting, they having been distinctly returned by their constituents to obtain for them the privileges of local self-government, which the centralistio tendencies of Dunedin have persistently denied them. These gentlemen are determined that the wishes of their constituents shall be carried and respected in spite of the cabals of Dunedin centralists, and accordingly the little plan for retaining the province of Otago intact is not likely to succeed.
