The schooner Herald, Captain McKay, arrived here from Picton timber-laden last night at 10 o’clock. , . , The arrivals yesterday from the Sound comprised the schooner Star of the Sea and ketches Elizabeth and Forest Queen. The cutter Dido for Blenheim, and the schooner Ruby for White Rock and Kaikoura, sailed yesterday forenoon. _ The wind went round to the north-west yesterday morning, which enabled the ship Dunbritton to sail out of the harbor for San Francisco. The departure of the steamer Stormbird has been postponed till this evening. The steamer City of Sydney will arrive here from Lyttelton this morning. She will sail North in the afternoon. The ketch Falcon sailed for Blenheim yesterday afternoon.

The steamer Tul sailed for Foxton at 5.15 p.m, yesterday, at which hour also th-i a.s. Matau left the wharf for Kelson, Westport, Greyniouth. and Hokitika. taking ■with her a large number of diggers for the West Coast rush and 12+ Government immigrants. Messrs. McMeckan. Blackwood, and Co.'s steamer Arawata, Captain Underwood, left here at 10 p.m. on the 20th, and arrived at Nelson at 9.30 a.m. on the 21st; left again at 11.30 a.m., cleared the French Pass at 2.30 p.m.; had strong head wind across the Strait, and arrived in harbor at 8 o'clock last night. She will sail for Melbourne via the South on Sunday forenoon, taking the outward Suez mail. The Union Company's steamer Taupo, Captain Worsp, left Port Chalmers at 5 p.m on the 19th, arrived at Lyttelton at 11 a.m. on the 20th, sailed at 7 o'clock same evening, arriving hero at noon yesterday. Had light head winds throughout the passage. She will sail for Northern ports this afternoon at 2 o’clock. The Hawea is advertised to sail for Southern ports this day at 3 p.m. The brigantine Sarah Pile, Captain Knowles, returned here last evening from Melbourne after an absence of fourmonths from this port. During that time she has been to Havelock and Oamaru. At the latter port she loaded for Melbourne, the passage between the two last-mentioned places occupying twenty-eight days, roost of that time being occupied In getting through Cook and Bass Straits, owing to the prevalence of headwinds. The run across the middle ground was made In a very short time, a howling gale following her all the way across. At Melbourne she loaded as one of Messrs. Turnbull and Co/s Melbourne and Wellington line of clipper sailing vessels, and secured a full cargo of merchandise. She cleared Melbourne Heads on the 7th inst, came through Bass Strait next evening, then had a hard gale from the south-east, which drove the vessel down to within forty miles of Cape Howe. Left the land on the 11th inst., and had heavy gales from north to south-west, with very severe thunder and lightning, till sighting Cape Farewell on the 18th. Had fine weather through the Strait. She will be berthed at the wharf this morning,
