The parrot cry about the Ministerial influence over the Press in general, and the New Zealand Times in particular, was repeated in the House yesterday by Sir George Grey and Messrs. Stout and De Lautour. We do not care to waste our space in noticing this matter, but desire shortly to say that, so far as the leader of the Opposition is concerned, we must decline to discuss the question with him after the treacherous manner in which he acted last session, by paying compliments to the conductor of this paper for the manner in which he (Sir George Grey) had been reported, and then going straight to Auckland and impugning the accuracy of our reports. Sir George must act in a different manner to this before he can demand an answer from us to his wild and intemperate accusations. As for Messrs. Stout and Db Lautour our task is easy. We are prepared to abide by the accuracy of our report, which Mr. De Lautour has characterised as “false.” The less Mr. De Lautour says about the influences to which newspapers are subject the better. We are subject to none. We think the Government to be in the right, and express our thoughts in our leading columns, whilst we report both Government and Opposition fairly. If Mr. Db Lautour denies that we do this, he simply states that which is not true.
