In the Legislative Council yesterday the Hon. Mr. Kobinson gave notice of his intention to ask to-day whether Sir Julius Vogel had been appointed to the office of AgentGeneral ; and further, what were the instructions which should guide the Agent-General, and what were the salary and emoluments attached to the office.

The City of Sydney did not come alongside the Queen’s wharf yesterday, but anchored some distance from it. This however did not prevent a large number of persona visiting her. The charge against C. E. Haughton was heard at the Resident Magistrate’s Court yesterday morning with closed doors. Messrs. Buckley and Barton made some technical objections as to tho form of the prosecution, but these were overruled by His Worship, after which the evidence of the principal witness was taken. The accused was committed to take his trial at the next sittings of the Supreme Court. Mr. Cooper, of Manners-street, well-known as a seedsman and horticulturist, has just issued a catalogue of seeds and plants, with instructions as to their cultivation, which must be of great benefit to gardeners, and especially to garden amateurs. Theworkhas been compiled with great care, and is the result of careful observation over a number of years as to what is best suited for the climate and soil of this province. Mr. Cooper during the present season has introduced many valuable plants and seeds, .especially in grasses. The subject of permanent grasses is of great importance to New Zealand, and Mr. Cooper has specially directed his attention to the subject. lu the work now before us a full description of the grasses and the nature of the soil best suited to each variety is given. Six years ago Mr. Q9s>per published a catalogue of plants and seeds, which we believe was the first of the kind published in the province. It was of very unpretentious appearance, and in striking contrast to the one now issued. The former comprised four pages, and the one under notice about fifty. Last night at the Odd Fellows’ Hall another crowded house greeted the representation of bid Father Thames, the audience frequently testifying their delight as the familiar scenes passed before them. This magnificent painting, so vast and. superior to anything that has yet been seen in Wellington, has taken firm hold of the Wellington, public, who are not slow to recognise genuine merit. Notwithstanding the great success which has attended this': entertainment, tho season must positively end on Monday next, so that those who have not already 'seen it have only a few more opportunities of doing so. There will be two exhibitions to-morrow (Saturday), one at 2.30 p.m. for schools and families, to which a reduced ;rate has been decided on ; children will be admitted for fid. to the gallery and back seats, adults, 2s. and Is. On Monday evening the exhibition will positively close. Some days ago a man whose proper name was unknown, but who went under the appellation of “Harry” :or “Pretty,’’ disappeared mysteriously, and his acquaintances Were somewhat alarmed as to his safety. It has since turned out that he left by the steamer Kiwi for Flaxbourne.

A musical and literary entertainment will be given, in connection with the St. Paul’s Church choir in the Sydney-street schoolroom this evening. The proceeds are to be devoted to St. Mark's Church.

At the Theatre Poyal last night the burlesque of “ Lalla Kookh ” and the comedy Perfection, or the Maid of Munster ” were repeated with great success. This programme will be repeated to-night.
