(PEB PRESS AGENCY.) Grahamstown, Monday. Another find of importance is reported from Owharoa, Ohinemuri district. Mr. James Maekay proceeded to Ohinemuri on Saturday on land purchase business. The Queen of May, Waio-Karaka,, yielded 4050z5. of gold for a fortnight. The total yield last week from all the mines was over 2000ozs. The Star this evening states that it has been informed that a scheme has been mooted by a number of capitalists to go into competition with the Government for the purchase of the Aroha block, including Kaimai, and that the said capitalists are prepared to offer the natives three or four times the price offered by the Government; also that they are prepared to test the validity of the proclamation under the Immigration and Public Works Act,, even to an appeal to the Privy Council. As it is understood that the purchase of the block by the Government will soon be completed, this attempt will materially obstruct the completion of the purchase and opening of land for settlement. The whole transaction is said to be a nefarious and mischievous effort of selfish Europeans, and if persevered in will seriously affect the welfare of the district,, and raise complications which will take a long time to overcome. Dunedin, Monday. Joseph Lemons shot himself _ through the head last night in a fit of depression. He has two daughter's in Sydney. Roberts has challenged Weston for £SOO to give him 500 out of 1000. Roberts plays Nesbitt to-night. Little Nell is doing, good'business here. The Secretary of the Harbor Board left for Wellington to watch the interests of the Board in matters coming before Parliament. The Board this afternoon agreed Ito the suggestion of the engineer to submit plans of harbor works to Mr. Blackett. Mr. Simpson goes to Wellington; in charge of; the plans..
