It seems utterly useless to deprecate or protest against the indecent and ungenerous manner in which certain people speak and write of Sir Julius Vogel. It would really appear as if how that he is leaving the colony a certain spirit of disappointment has arisen amongst those who were accustomed to hurl the coarsest abuse against him. They feel that in his absence their occupation will be gone, and they are concentrating the venom and animosity of years into the space of a few weeks. No doubt it is disappointing to speakers of the Bees' type, and to journalists of a type with which Wellington is well acquainted, to think that after a. few days the object of their hatred will be no longer ever present when they are at a loss for someone on whom to try their best at abuse. But even this excuse should not induce them to be so violent and incessant as they are. The open-mouthed way in which they howl at Sir Julius Vogel is too like a concert of curs to be effective, and the garrulous vehemence : they exhibit is too much of the fishwoman type to render it pleasing to the majority of his opponents. The utterances of the Dunedin Guardian a few days since, and the vote of Tuesday night, should teach them a lesson. It should teach them that political enmity need not mean personal nnimosity, and that nothing so becomes foemen as generosity when the battle is over.
