The Union Co.’s s.s. Hawes, Capt. Wheeler, arrived at the wharf yesterday at 11 a.m. She left Onehnnga anchorage at 4.20 p.m. on the Ist inst., and cleared the bar at 6 p.m.: passed by New Plymouth in consequence of heavy westerly weather, and anchored off Nelson at 10 p.m. on the 2nd, arriving at the wharf at 8 a.m. on the 3rd; left at 8.45 p.m. on the 4th, and arrived at Picton at 5 a.m. yesterday; left at 6 a.m., arriving as above. She sailed again at 4 o’clock yesterday afternoon for the South, The steamer Easby sailed for Port Chalmers direct at noon yesterday. Captain Swede, master of the schooner Cynthia, has been appointed to fill a similar position on Messrs, Greenfield and Stewart’s late purchase, the ‘ ketch Reliance. Mr. M. Walsh, mate of the Cynthia, takes command of that vessel. The exact price which Messrs. Greenfield and Stewart paid for the Reliance is £llOO. We understand that they intend to employ her in the timber trade, her first trip from here being to Kalpara. She will first go on the Slip to have her bottom sheeted with copper. The p.s. Manawatu did not arrive at Wanganui till noon yesterday. She left here in.company with the s s Stormbird on Saturday afternoon, and the latter vessel arrived at Wanganui on Sunday morning. Doubtless the heavy westerly gale which blew all Saturday night, Sunday, and Monday compelled the Manawatu to seek shelter on the way up. We learn that Mr. D. McKay has taken a halfshare—£soo—in the schooner Herald, Mr. George Thomas retaining the other half. Mr. McKay has taken command of her. Captain Lambert, her late master, has been transferred to the schooner Unity. The s.s. Albion from Sydney via Nelson will arrive here this morning. She will sail for Hobarton ana Melbourne via the South on Friday. The splendid ship Zeaiandia, now almost daily expected from London, will be, if she sails from here according to her advertised date, the first wool ship of the season. She is expected to be despatched about the 23rd November. The schooner Colonist arrived here at 9.30 last night from Lyttelton. She left there last week, and had heavy weather up. She brings a full cargo of colonial produce. The cutter Dido, from Picton, arrived here late last night. She left there on Monday, and had strong N.W. winds across. Owing to the very heavy gale blowing outside yesterday morning she had to come to an anchor at the Heads. Last night the wind went round to the southward and brought her into port. The s a Stormbird. Captain Dolle, left the Corporation wharf, Wanganui, yesterday at 11.45, passed the Manawatu going in the river, crossed the bar at 1 o’clock, arriving in our harbor at 11.39 last night. Captain Doile reports having experienced strong westerly squalls with heavy westerly sea to Mans, thence strong S.E.; passed the s.s. Matau off Terawiti. The well-known topsail schooner Hannah Barratt is announced for sale. She is a very serviceable craft of 57 tons register, and is quite new, having been built only some four years ago. Particulars may be had of Captain Williams or the master on board. Owing to the heavy N.W gale whlchblewin the harbor all yesterday the ship Waikato was unable to haul alongside the wharf. She was entered at the Customs yesterday, and weather permitting will take up her berth this morning. The s.s. Matau took her departure for Foxton, Westpoit, Greymouth, and Hokitika at 8 o’clock last evening. The Canterbury, schooner, left Polorns Sound yesterday morning, and arrived alongside the Wellington wharf last night, : She brings timber. The Cynthia left the wharf for Pelorus Sound last night.
