ARRIVAL OF THE SHIP WAIKATO FROM LONDON. Early yesterday morning the signal of a ship from the northward was announced, and at 8.30 the N.Z.S. Co.'sship Waikatoshowed round Halsweß Point. The vessel made one tack across the harbor, but the wind being very squally from the W.N.W. the anchor had to be let go. In the afternoon the wind went more into the north and she sailed up to the inner anchorage. As the Walkato has been here before and fully described by us, it Is scarcely necessary to give any detailed account of her. Suffice it to say that, considering the wear and tear consequent upon so long a voyage, she is in as good condition as when she first visited "Wellington, and is a credit to her captain and officers. She is under the command of Captain William Worster, a gentleman who is well known in New Zealand, ho having visited the colony several times. However, he has only been In command of the Waikato for about 12 months, having been transferred from the ship Waimea, when in Lyttelton last year, to the one he at present commands. She brings a large number of passengers, both saloon, cabin, and steerage, but no Government immigrants. Her present voyage out has been a very pleasant and quick one, the run having been made from pilot to pilot in 80 days. She left the South West India Docks on the 6th June, with a full cargo and ninetylive souls on board. Anchored in Gravesend, and took on board live stock and two shorthorn bulls; got under way next day, but brought up in the afternoonin the Downs. Next day commenced her voyage down Channel; was off the' Start on the 10th, and landed the pilot the same day oft* Tor Bay. Had variable weather down Channel. Passed Madeira on June 20th, and Palroa Island on the 22nd. The usual amount of variable weather was experienced till the N.E. tradrs were met with on the 23rd June, in lat. 28deg. 22min, long. lDdeg. 30min. : they held moderate and fine for about flvo days, when they died away to calm and variable weather, chiefly from the E.S.E. Crossed the Equator on July 6th. Tho S.E. trades were most unfavorable, the wind being mostly from the south, which drove the vessel close to America; in fact, it was necessary to tack twice in order to clear the coast of Brazil. The meridian of Greenwich was crossed in lot 41deg. ISmin. S. on the 3rd Aug.; passed the longtltudeof the Capo of Good .Hope on August oth, In lat. 43dez. 43min. She came across the Southern Ocean on the 44th parallel of latitude, with the usual amount of strong westerly winds. Sighted Cape Farewell on Sunday afternoon last, and ran through tho Strait with a strong westerly gale; was boarded by pilot Holmes at 7 o'clock yesterday morning, and anchored in harbor as above. The following vessels were spoken:—Juno 21, In SOdog. 44min. K.. 17c!eg. 24min. Vf„ the Cholula, from London to Calcutta, 12 days out; July 1. Bdeg. N., 27deg.43min. W., barque Lennox Castle; July 11, J) degOmin 8., 33deg31min. W, barque Carmarthenshire. The voyage throughout has been free from accidents, if wo except the fact that when off Cape Leuwin on the 22nd August, in lat. 45deg. 22min. S., long. 107 deg. 25rnin. E., during a very heavy squall, tho steering apparatus was carried away, obliging tho ship to lay-to for twelve h»urs whilst new steering gear was being rigged up. On the voyage a little stranger made its appearance whose name was not on the passenger list, the happy mother being a cabin passenger named Colson. I'he "Waikato lias two valuable shorthorn bulls, consigned to Messrs. W. and G. Tumbull and Co. They have arrived in excellent condition, and aro a credit to the person who had charge of thorn. The Walkato .will be the first wool ship of the season to load her* this year under tho auspices of the N.Z.S. Company. She will haul alongside the wharf this morning. The usual notice to consignees appears elsewhere.

The time-ball maybe used, -to-day for rating chronometers. A chronometer true on Greenwich time would show 12h. 30m. when the bail drops, j Any dip •ference is error, plus or minus, of the chronometer. Owing to the prevalence of strong westerly winds on the west coast of the Middle Island yesterday, tho steamer Tui was unable to get out of Foxton. The s.s.-Rangatira-did not'arrive here till 11 o clock last night from Napier. The passage has been a long one, which is accounted for by the .very heavy weather met with. She left Napier at 10 a.m. on Sunday with a strong W.S.W. wind, which increased at 10 p.m. to a terrific gale. Hove the vessel to till 3.30 a in., when the galo moderated, but continued to blow strongly from the W.S.W. to Cape Palliser ; irora thence till arrival a strong gale from the N.W., with very heavy sea.: She will leave again tnis evening for Napier. The brig Neptune sailed out of the harbor yesterday afternoon for Newcastle, in ballast, and with several passengers. The s.s. Taranaki sailod for Northern ports at 2 p.m. yesterday. The s.s. Kiwi sailed for Castle Point and Napier yesterday with a full complement of passengers and a largo general cargo. Tho steamers Manawatu and Stormbird are expected here to-day from Wanganui. They are both advertised to leavo again to-morrow afternoon. Yssterday the new boiler for the s.s. Napier was placed on board of her, being lifted from the wharf to the vessel by means of the largo 5-ton crane. The crane itself appeared to be on its mcttlo, for the carriage onwhich it stands had to bo wedged up in the centre to keop it from sinking down, and tho two outside wheels had to be chained down to the wharf to prevent it from tippling over. We may state that the weight of the boiler is four tons and a-half. The s s. Matau will sail for Foxton and the West Coast this afternoon at three o'clock. The agents of the ship Dunbritton notify that all claims against that vessel are to be rendered not later than Friday next, the Bth inst. . The s s. Easby will sail for Dunedin this morning at The schooner Star of the Sea sailed for Havelock at 1 o'clock this morning
