The report by the accountant on the state of the city books shows a very disgraceful system of keeping accounts. One report says the books in no way represent the state of the city finances. Tauranga, Wednesday. The Bay of Plenty Times severely censures the prospecting party for returning from Kaimai, and states that the natives’ opposition is mere bounce. A telegraph lineman named Alfred Porter was drowned on Sunday at Kati Kati. The body was not recovered. Ddnedin, Wednesday. Haughton goes North on Friday on bail. The Town Clerk proceeds North for the purpose of securing the Dunedin Corporation Bill, or having the general Bill so altered as to suit the requirements of this city. The Guardian predicts that the result of the Ministerial changes will be the postponement of abolition for twelve months. The Times says of public meetings :—lt can hardly be doubted that the attitude assumed by the meeting on Tuesday would, unless more moderate counsel prevailed, end in a forcible resistance, and summoning our representatives, one and all, to leave the Assembly because their just voice could no longer be heard ; in fact, taking the first step towards a resistance by force of arms. The Maori's visits to the West Coast smaller settlements are to be discontinued.
The Government have refused to supply the City Council with Hansard, at which Councillors express their disgust. A meeting is called for at Caversham tomorrow night, to discuss the political situation. A series of meetings in the suburbs are to be held with the same object.
