In reply to the resolution adopted at the Whangarei meeting, calling on Sir Robert Douglas to support the separation resolutions, the member for Marsden telegraphed refusing to comply, and offering to resign if the elector? as a body, wished him to do so. The Waipau electors afterwards held a meeting, and passed a vote of confidence in him ; but urged the throwing out of the Counties Bill. Dunedin, Friday. The resolutions for the public meeting have been drafted and the committee have arranged for a proposer and seconder. Lyttelton, Friday. A magisterial inquiry was held to-day re the collision between the Australian Sovereign and barque Ann, on July 21, when about thirty miles from Newcastle. After hearing the evidence, the magistrate returned the officers’ certificates. The official decision will be given to-morrow. The Halciono, from London, is coming up the harbor. Christchurch, Friday. The annual poultry, pigeon, and canary exhibition to-day was a groat success. There were 372 entries, being 120 more than last year. The quality of the exhibits is very good. A pigeon-race took place during the day from Ashburton to Christchurch. The winner flew the distance (fifty-six miles), against a strong breeze, in one hour forty minutes twelve seconds. Napier, Friday The Jockey Club have resolved to take the professional advice of an engineer as to draining the bid course, and putting bank round it to protect it from flood, owners of property adjacent contributing towards the expense. Arrangements have been made tor the next Agricultural Show on October 1-7 Amongst the prizes will be a £SO cup.
